I didn't love this show unconditionally. I did nothing but post in these threads week after week because of how much I loved this show. But it had a shitty ending, which happens to a lot of shows, even really good ones. That's anime for you.

Don't disqualify someone's opinion just because you disagree with it. It's been a few hours since the show ended so the threads are going to be full of people giving their overall impressions.

It just means that the writer of the first 7 episodes was a yurifag who put more yuri themes into them than what was originally intended by the main writer/director. So after episode 7 the sudden lack of focus on yuri development became obvious as the show went on its originally intended course.

I'm not saying Oshiyama didn't intend for Cocona and Papika's relationship to lack yuri, but it's obvious that Yuniko had a much more grand and complex idea about their relationship than was originally thought out, and since she didn't write the later episodes she unfortunately couldn't carry through with that plan.

Turns out the ending was actually good. Screenshots and anons' opinions made me almost lose hope.

It's pretty clear that it's a CocoPapi end. Even good friends wouldn't tell each other how much they love each other this much. Still, a kiss would have made it my favorite anime of all time. Now it's still just my second.

So, the drab, boring world was a Pure Illusion after all. Only figured that out after everyone said so in the thread after the livestream and then after watching it with subs. Hell, that's even better. I wouldn't want the characters to live in such a boring world like this. The colorful world with Papika is where they belong.

Ending delivered on a good ending for Papika and Cocona and at this point, that's all I wanted. The adventures in the Pure Illusions and the mystery surrounding it in the first half were definitely the high point but it was a fun ride all the way through. I'm gonna miss this show.

If I had to pinpoint exactly what I didn't like about this show, it's that nothing happened. There were no stakes. Nobody had to make any kind of difficult choices, or put themselves at risk for anything. There was never a sense that the girls were actually in danger. I mean, one of them even got shot by a barrage of rockets and just needed some first aid afterwards. I remember feeling the same way about Bubuki Buranki (the first season) when I realized that everyone had a magic barrier that could deflect bullets.

The whole Mimi thing where "oh no she's breaking reality with her tentacles" was hard to care about too because at that point we knew exactly what was going to happen anyways. And even though the relationship between Cocona and Papika was well-developed, they overdid the whole separate-and-reunite thing. So when they reunited again instead of being emotional it was just the same shit.

No emotion in that final arc, that's the thing. Which is what happens when you have a story involving two flat-as-cardboard characters like Mimi and Salt instead of making your main characters the focus towards the end.

We meme about writing but this really was a writing issue. I won't say having Yuniko do the ending would have fixed it, because I thought some of the episodes she didn't write were well-written enough. It was more of a structural problem where they decided to shift the plot focus to secondary characters during the show's climax.

I like just about everything about the show really but I think the structure is the major weakness. It feels like the director had a story to tell but wasn't really sure how to go about it being a first timer and kind of made a few mistakes. Too many ideas, not thematically clear enough, needed to trim the fat, backloading most of the plot were the main ones. That said still my AOTS and probably AOTY and I can't wait to see another show from Oshiyama and hope he learns from this first one. Haven't seen a show made with such clear sincerity, passion and creativity and clear absolute love of anime for all it is for a long time. It was a real breath of fresh air in the industry in its current state.
