No matter what the reason, it was inexcusably poor directing. Maybe it was unintentional, that would just mean Sato failed to correctly frame one of the most important scenes of the series. It lessened the effect due to lack of clarity and missed a great chance for an amazing, romantic shot of them kissing. I find it hard to believe she is that bad a director.
