I've been watching it all day

After watching the stream, I can safely say this anime is complete shit. The early episodes brought up tons of unrelated things and then dropped them. The animation drops significantly in the later parts. The dialogue is repetetive and poorly written. It starts off like it has a purpose but it doesn't, it's just a bunch of random shit thrown up hoping something may stick.

Why couldn't the story be consistent? There's nothing here of substance. The characters are extremely shallow, boiling down to basically shouting names and screaming gibberish. There is no development, they just do things because they have to, for unexplained reasons. Most of the characters could be removed and it'd make zero difference, it's just a mess of an anime to copy shit and show off pretty, inane pictures. Terrible show. It deserves all the hate it's getting.

In Iroha it was "auntie" because her actual mother was too busy being a wriggly blob and yelling at her dad. When Auntie forgot her and she failed to find the courage to keep her promise, her abstraction of the maternal as auntie collapsed, and facilitated the change that made her who she was, and the change which Cocona and Papika accidentally reversed. In Mimi it was herself, because she literally had no mother figure aside from herself, who had become a mother. When her role as mother was denied to her by force, the switch was facilitated as a means to violently re-assert her position as maternal authority. In a sense, the tenability of her self-conception as maternal was challenged, and so she changed her self-conception so she could maintain a stable abstraction of maternal self.

Interestingly, Cocona's world crashed down when she discovered that her maternal figure, her grandmother, wasn't real. That was the moment that a new maternal figure, Mimi, emerged from within her. I'm half of the mind that the Mimi that's been going on this rampage isn't actually Mimi from the flashback, and is just Cocona's alternate self, constructed to the likeness of the mother she only vaguely knows. Just like Iroha and Mimi from the flashback, Cocona's switch with her other self was facilitated by a breakdown of her abstraction of the maternal.

Upon rewatch I think 4 is the weakest episode now, followed by the back half of 12. It wasn't handholdy and tried to be comfy, but not much happens besides Cocona and Papika living together and being stranded on a desert island. It's still not bad since there are some nice moments like the two sharing their thoughts on the island and the last few seconds holding hands while traveling into the PI.

This. I remember people saying the same thing while the show was airing. Episodes 1-3 had been so intense that there needed to be a bit of a break to calm down and also to help build up the characters a bit more, since development had been largely incidental in the first 3.

4 did both of those things very well. We learned a lot about the characters that we hadn't learned from prior episodes and the episode itself was laid back and slow, moving at a comfortable pace with simple issues and simple solutions.

Part of that as well is the idea that the apple represents a generalized means of the female producing affect when denied agency. One of the defining characteristics of the bad mother, at least in literary terms, is harming their children as a means of affecting the world outside of their motherhood.

One of the oldest example of this is Euripides' Medea. The apple association with the archetype comes from Snow White in the 19th century, and is one that plays well into themes present in Flip Flappers (and in psychoanalysis in general). In the original story, only half of the apple is poisoned and it's cut in half to be shared, the un-poisoned half with the Queen and the poisoned half with Snow White. It should be obvious how that relates to all the DPI shit going on in this show.

Snow White itself is really just an adaptation of Persephone but that's a separate issue.

So one of those 'natural' tulpas huh? I know someone who has a few of those. I made my Tulpa in 2011, after lurking and occasionally asking questions in the Tulpa threads that started cropping up in /x/ around that time. Honestly, the only reason I even made my Tulpa was to satiate my curiosity- I wanted to see if that stuff was real or not- all of those people couldn't be trolling, and they didn't seem to be mentally ill either (at least not all of them....). So I made her in summer of 2011 and was surprised that it was all pretty legit. I never bothered to try and get to the whole 'imposition' phase because I didn't care about any of that. All I was curious about was the ability to create an autonomous (or a very good illusion of such a thing) 'person' within my mind. It ended up working. Its neat, but we don't do much. Shes just sort of there, we acknowledge each others presence, talk rarely. She seems happy, sometimes I feel bad for not doing more with her, but she seems to understand, after all, she is a part of me in the end. I find that having a tulpa helps with interpreting and understanding more surreal fiction like Flip Flappers, and it REALLY helped me understand and relate to Umineko in a way I feel like a lot of people couldn't. But now I am rambling on too much. I guess it was just nice to run into someone else with one in an unexpected place. Have a happy new year!
