When Kumiko got the letter from her sister, she started thinking about her sister and Asuka.

It's clear that at this point she thinks of Asuka like an older sister. This is probably why they included the scene with Kumiko telling Asuka that she loves her. She didn't want to have any regrets about not saying this to her, just like with her sister.

The fuck was this about? Kaori and Reina's relationship had gone nowhere noteworthy. That scene played out like a whole other drama had happened between them.

I mean, just run through it:

Before the solo drama, what cursory glimpses we were given of interactions between Reina and Kaori showed them being polite to each other as one would expect in a senpai/kouhai relationship.

The drama:
Kaori wanted the solo. She didn't display any hostility towards Reina in particular, hers was a more internal struggle, and deep down she knew Reina deserved the solo.
Ribbons caused all the drama by being a nasty little shit stirrer. As it went on, she quickly realised Reina clearly had the upper hand and begged her out of desperation.
Reina was steadfast in her belief that she deserved the solo. She wavered a little at the last minute because as stubborn as she is she doesn't want to be a villain.
At the audition Reina was once again clearly superior. Kaori conceded that she doesn't deserve the solo

After the drama, we barely see Reina interact with them.
There's like a single brief scene where Reina apologises for being smug, and Kaori apologises too before they get interrupted by Natsuki antagonising Ribbons.
When they perform, Kaori looks a little downcast and humble when Reina plays the solo, both times. The focus is not solely on her throughout the solo, though.
Much later on in the show Ribbons exhibits an almost begrudging concern when Reina is distracted, and states that Kaori was concerned too, OFF-SCREEN.
They're thankful when Reina is the sole student to shout to Taki, saving their skin, and console her when she embarrasses herself later, neither of which I see as holding much meaning, it's more of an obligatory response.

Wow, totally worth looking at Kaori's face virtually the whole final time we get to hear Reina play. The drama was a whole season ago.

As I said, Kaori had no real beef with Reina, she just wanted her last chance, before conceding it was better going to Reina. Kaori and Reina were polite to each other before, during and after the drama, except for that one moment Reina exploded which was pretty justifiable. Sure it makes sense Kaori is still somewhat sensitive about it, but it never came up again in regards to her feelings about it, the show needs to remind us of something like that otherwise we get the impression she's moved on. These things need to be proportionate, it's a similar problem to why people are flinging shit about Shoe and Reina and the ends they got compared to the amount of exposure they've had in the show.

Yuuko was a little shit, her development with Reina has been pretty tiny, as shown in her awkwardly expressing concern for Reina right near the end, but we haven't even really seen her apologise. When it was revealed she'd accepted that Reina deserved it, she was talking to Kumiko.

If Kaori had been more engaged in a Reina-related plot beyond the solo drama, and their relationship had noticeably strengthened, I would feel it was more justified. As it is, it felt weirdly off balance to me.

This is true, but I don't know if you can really attribute it to that being the effect they were purposefully trying to create. Or at least, if that was intentional, in my opinion they failed at effectively conveying it.

It seems to me Kyoani ramped up the impact of the Reina scenes in season 1, and then they were stuck when they had to put together season 2 with its many plots that literally didn't involve her. It was less about Reina being normalised than the author and then Kyoani deciding to give her nothing to do but pine for Taki. All the talk of being special which was a big part of her character got practically thrown out the window. We didn't see her practicing hard. We didn't see her doing weird off-centre things in an effort to be more interesting than all the normal chumps. These aspects of her character weren't to do with how Kumiko viewed her, they were actions Reina took on herself. She was proactive in season 1. In season 2 she suddenly and without explanation became a passive character who was just always there in the background thirsting for Taki's cock while Kumiko's attention was taken up by new dramas.

KyoAni had to present her as this super special genius trumpet girl for Kumiko to learn about being passionate for music. But she was clearly more than that, she had problems dealing with people and she had a long standing crush on Taki.

S2 shows us why she's like that. She's privileged and talented and has been lonely since she was a kid, but instead of finding friends she instead latched onto a "special" person who happened to be Taki.

After S1 she's toned down her tokobetsu act and she's on good terms with the trumpets and the other girls. Even though she hasn't moved on from Taki, I think the friendships she has and will develop among the band will make her striving to be "special" more meaningful and will no doubt help her redirect her passions. She's a senior member now and no doubt on her way to being section leader and principal player.

You can say that if you like, but I will always have a difficult time accepting it.

Reina took up Kumiko's attention for a significant chunk of season 1. If you read that interview with the author about the books, it's revealed that in the first drafts for the first book, Kumiko didn't even exist, Reina was the MC and it was from her POV - but then she switched it up because Reina's drama with the band and her sheer superiority over them musically worked better as seen from the perspective of an observer - thus Kumiko was created and became the MC.

And then Kyoani got involved and she was asked to write more books which became season 2.

Now I'm not saying that a first draft of a story can't develop into something totally different by the time it's published. Kumiko IS the MC and her attention being taken up by other dramas isn't exactly an outlandish notion. But Reina's dominance over season one firmly embeds her into the story as an integral part of it, or at least that's what you would expect. I mean I don't think anyone would argue against the possibility of Reina being more of an active player in the ongoing plots of season 2 so that she wasn't just gawping at Taki all day, which is an annoying thing to see her constantly coming back to. If they'd given her something more to do, season 2 wouldn't have been nearly as weird and frustrating. Likewise for Shuuichi and his almost total absence from the season.
