I never joke about writing quality. BW had a lot of good stand alone episodes and Karibuchi's character arc was cool. It was disappointing that most of the other witches didn't get as much development, but that doesn't take away from what we did get.

Episode 13: The Grand Petersburg Strategy

This is a story of what happened between Brave Witches 7th and 8th episodes.

December 26th - the day after Saturnalia.
After resupplying the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, Pilot Officer Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen and Lieutenant Sanya V. Litvyak decide to stay at the Petersburg base on break until the new year.
But, while the two have fun spending time with the members of the 502nd, news of a Neuroi attack comes in.

"Eila-san, you're really fired up!"
"Hikari, this is how you dodge an attack."
"Do you remember the first time we flew through the night sky with Yoshika-chan?"

Now, two original members of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing team up with the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing on a common front and "The Grand Petersburg Strategy" unfolds!!

I hate to admit it because I was super hyped for Brave Witches, but it just lacks charm.

I just thought about what made Strike Witches so enjoyable to watch.
It wasn't witches fighting Neuroi.
It wasn't excessive fanservice.
No.
It was Erica teasing Barkhorn.
It was Mio going crazy on alcohol.
It was Lucchini stealing panties and riling everyone up.
It was Perrine getting angry at Yoshika's clumsiness.
It was Yoshika's happy face fondling sleeping Shirley's naked boobs.
It was Eila teasing Perrine.
It was Sanya's song at night.
It was Lynne gaining more confidence.
It was Minna being a gentle and firm mother for her squad.

As much as I like the characters in Brave Witches, their overall interactions felt dull, superficial. They aren't a family like the 501st.

I don't disagree with anything you said, but I still liked what they gave us instead. Hikari's story was enough to keep me interested and the other witches did a good role as secondary characters. It's by no means a great anime, nor is it nearly as good as SW,
but it's not bad either. I'd give it a 6/10.

I think the only difference is that you had greater expectations than me for the show and therefore you fell more frustrated that it's not a great show.

It's such a shame that this season was surprisingly lackluster compared to SW. Bad CG and no Rall episode is a few of the many things Silver Link did wrong.
I'm really looking forward to Ep 13 seeing how likely it's the Eilanya OVA I've always wanted. I just hope SL doesn't screw that up somehow.

The only thing that looked worse than anything in BW from Season 1 was that panning shot over land during one of the training paintball battles. Everything else that utilized CG was better.

Everybody knew Hikari's gun was going to deal the final blow and it was awesome.

It wasn't very well executed most of the time though, the models themselves were lacking and the lighting, but they pulled off nice shots otherwise. And there was some over-use where CGI really wasn't needed, like pic related.

On the whole I liked the series, I like the different direction SL took it especially in the mid-part, and the small additions almost as a nod to fans such as the tank witches and aurora. Hoping the BD improvements give this series what it deserves

Holy goddamn hell this finale episode was atrociously bad. Especially the first part of it. The whole segment of Takami using her Absolute Eye and us somehow supposed to be surprised at the fact 502nd would help supporting her in use of it is just what tier writing. And her rushing in to use it without telling others first in combat is just what? Hikari running on about ''I must stop her.'' when Takami literally has now 8 witches besides her to support her in use of Absolute Eye is weird dumb shit.
800mm AP round being nullified midair by some neuroi cloud miasma was hilarious.
The battle choreography and visuals of the final battle were abysmally bad, literally no idea what the hell was going on other than the fact things were being shot at and witches were going forward while bad cgi was everywhere. While there are less crotchbutt shot shoved in every scene which is commendable, the series overall story feels weak. MC has less magic higher stamina, but they fail to make it interesting enough. Naoe punch should've been a hot blooded scene, with hikari and naoe shouting before unleashing her punch. I wish the end episode animated like some hot blooded fighting mecha anime.

How in the world could they fuck up this bad? This stands in the pantheon of Kancolle anime level bad.

I can -somewhat- forgive Kancolle as the lore of the game was pretty loose in the first place and so many things had to be supplemented by the writers on the spot. But for the 502nd anime, they were literally given high grade ingredients and years worth of recipes to follow. How could the end product turn up this bad?

The 502nd is a zany ragtag bunch. Their functional dysfunctionality is their selling point as a unit. They're a gallery of colorful fuckups with lots of character. There's a reason why they're the next most popular wing after the 501st. And you see almost none of that in the anime. Again, given the stuff they had at hand here, how in the world did they fuck it up?

In cooking, no matter how good your ingredients are and how well structured your recipe is, one rogue ingredient can fuck things up horribly.

In this case, the Karabuchi Sisters.

Much of the spotlight that should've gone to the 502nd proper went to those two sisters. If the director really wanted to wave his boner for the two sisters around, he really should've just made an entirely new anime focusing on them or made a 508th anime as most of the stuff regarding that wing is still in the dark and will allow a lot of maneuvering ground for the anime.

In any case, have fun because Hikari is now a canon member of the 502nd who was totally there all this time despite years of material indicating that they're an 8 member unit.

I look forward to the 503rd anime some years down the line where Yuno isn't the MC, but rather, some brand new Fuso Witch whom everyone in the 503rd will immediately love.

Something we will never get answer to from the producers or SL, ever. The disappointment levels are higher than Everest with this season. Worst feeling is that Hikari is now officially, canonically part of 502nd, instead of returning to Fuso in the end. Look at how 'canon' I am now! Yeah, they gutted the fanservice but didn't actually replace it with anything. That said, I suppose you can count Sanya and Eila, tank witches and Aurora as fanservice, but those few moments weren't enough to redeem the series.

Strike Witches doesn't have a one dimensional character storyline. In fact, most of the characters are forced to leave a comfort zone in order to protect the one that they love. Hint: Eila, Erica and nearly everyone else. In Brave Witch, they stay at their own area of speciality.

Let's see, everything? S1 ep6 is still the best episode from the entire franchise so far and ep7 is one of the funniest just to name episodes in general, the finale was pretty damn badass arc and well done.
The character interactions as well the neuroi fights too. SW looks like a masterpiece when compared to BW.

BW has had exactly 1 season so far. Overall it's hard to say, personally I think SW has a few standout characters but BW doesn't have any of the shitty ones that SW does.

How? Elaborate. All SW was was a bunch of girls sitting on an island drinking tea, BW was about the gritty eastern front which a lot of people had been asking for. I say BW did this aspect far better.

Yes, because static shots and neuroi that fire beams while moving in a straight line every episode were really exciting. Fight choreography was far more interesting in BW as was the directing in terms of shots and angles. You had improvised bows and all sorts of goofy nonsense, while in SW the fights were all pretty much the same.

The only one I could consider giving you, though the soundtrack in BW was good as well.

Well, I had a whole wall of text typed up in reply but it got swallowed up so fuck this shit. Let's just say I completely disagree on SW having decent writing (Brave Witches was bad in this sense too but still better) but agreeing that it would've been better without Hikari (who was still better than Yoshika though). Also, I'm only a minority on these specific threads on /a/ where the main whiners are a cancerous namefag, a guy who complains about lack of loli and a guy who complains about lack of butts. BW is actually doing well outside this circlejerk.
