People should stop parroting this, it hasn't been true for a while. There are few shows mastered at 1080p but there are also a lot of shows that are mastered at a resolution greater than 720p (though less than 1080p) meaning they definitely benefit from a 1080p rip.

What are you running, a pentium pro with a voodoo 2? As long as you have the acceleration enabled even the cheapest chromebook should play 1080p just fine. My cheepo Acer running ubuntu does just that
