I was surprised at how little I cared when it turned out he became a Yakuza anyway. We never had a moment in the series about him seriously thinking or expressing himself meaningfully about anything.

That's the problem with most long going manga. The authors only know how to write up to a certain point before it starts becoming repetitive or finding a staple, in the case of harem, put it off for as long as possible and beat around the bush. Which in Raku's case was pretty much everything and then he didn't know how to actually bridge him into other stuff because he was never the focus, the girls are almost always the focus mainly. So they just cliche wrote him off as 'honoring the father and following in his footsteps' and that was that, instead of actually writing his character and building upon new stuff.

Honestly its a problem in most anime/manga regardless of how long they've gone for.
