>Makoto Shinkai has a problem, a big problem. His mystical teenage body-swap movie “your name.” has become such a massive hit it’s beginning to worry him. “It’s not healthy,” the boyish director told AFP. “I don’t think any more people should see it.”

>And now there’s talk of Oscars. “I really hope it doesn’t win,” he added.

>"I am absolutely not at Miyazaki’s level. Honestly, I really don’t want Miyazaki to see it because he will see all its flaws.”

why are the japanese like this
>>
>>151514571
It kind of feels like humbly gloating more than anything "I'm successful enough to be able to tell people not to see my movie."
>>
Why are they such a bunch of faggots? It's like they're shitting on every director in the industry by doing this.

We are talking about anime here, the visual and presentation probably make up about 90% of the meat. Plot probably the rest of the 10%. As long as they are passable, it is alright. I mean there is a reason anime is the best medium for SoL where plot is almost non existent. Not to mention how majority try to be plot heavy always ended up being a train wreck and shit.

I mean the storyline here is just like a ripoff of lake house/il mare/love letter. Seriously, if all anime look as good as this, we would probably be heading back to the golden age of 80/90s high budget OVA.
>>
It's asian thing, not just Japanese. In the west, if someone gives you a compliment; its normal to reply "yes!! Thank you! I worked hard and managed to beat everyone with my intellect and skill! Haha thanks for noticing!"

But the Asians and the British have a culture of humility where it's condisered rude to just revel in praise, even if you created something worthy of doing so. Look up speeches from the Oscars vs asian media awards. Everyone in Hollywood talks about how long they wanted to win and how much the award validates them etc. In the east they usually say something along the lines of "thank you very much, this is another reason for me to work even harder and deliver more great work for you to enjoy".

As an American I honestly find it refreshing. Especially when it comes to something that's such a massive success like this film, what is he supposed to say?

"Yes I made the greatest film ever and the box office proves that. Drink up plebs, it's a masterpiece"

Everyone knows it's a massive success so showing humility in the face of that seems like the proper thing to do. Especially for an artist.

From what I understand from my little knowledge on the culture, it's not acceptable to be very braggy or be too prideful in yourself. It's looked at as a bad trait. I think this is simply what he's doing here. Not that he doesn't find any truth in it.

Okay, no. This is not true. You are basically saying visuals are everything and plot doesn't mean anything.

I certainly don't agree, I watch things mainly for the plot. But that's me. I think for other people, it should be something like %50 plot %50 visuals. You're telling a story with this medium. No matter how pretty, if it's shitty it really doesn't have any value.

Why is Eva so famous and we're still talking about it 20 years later? Not because of the shiny visuals, let me tell you.

Good looking anime with no plot comes and goes, they don't mean anything in the long run. Good stories stay though, even with bad visuals. We connect with characters, watch them throughout their stories and feel something with them. Just good wallpaper material isn't good anime.

>>151517276
It was basically a joke, too. Frozen came out the same year so even if Madoka received a nomination it wouldn't have stood a chance because of the Disney stranglehold. Plus it wasn't a standalone film so no western film critic (or any self-respecting critic period) would give a fuck. Most film/literary awards are given to works that stand on their individual artistic merits.

>>
>>151517926
But the direction/storyboarding/composition in Madoka were actually really great. Shinbo and Inu Curry carried the fuck out of the visual presentation.

The biggest issue it'd face with legit critics is that the narrative and writing are too shallow and just fall apart if you put them under a microscope. It's still better than your typical Disney feature length music video, but it wouldn't stand against higher-class western cinema unlike Miyazaki's films which carry more serious themes and messages.

It's almost hilarious looking back at how people were hailing Madoka as "the Evangelion of mahou shoujo" and now it's just "that show that rekindled adult-oriented mahou shoujo".

Rebellion is a visual masterpiece but it indeed ruined all of the significant themes and characterization in the TV series. It's a shame, they already had it working fine as a cash cow with merchandise and spinoffs.

I think its influence was significant as well. I enjoyed Mahou Shouko Ikusei Keikaku immensely, so while Madoka might not stand forever as a piece of art the Butcher at least did a good job sparking some creativity in other writers.
>>
> Honestly, I really don’t want Miyazaki to see it because he will see all its flaws.

>>
>>151515794
>Why is Eva so famous and we're still talking about it 20 years later? Not because of the shiny visuals, let me tell you.
Part of Evangelion's legacy was fucking up the mecha genre with Yamashita's nontraditional designs. And the series was fantastically storyboarded and inked up until 25+26 where they semi-intentionally, semi-budget defficiently degraded the animation quality.

The BDs are beautiful and all of the hand-drawn scenes under Anno's directions still have massive impact on rewatching. Visuals were definitely a strong aspect of Eva, just like every other aspect of it. The writing carried it, sure, but all aspects held up and complimented the work fairly equally.

>>151519926
>Tezuka killed the industry in its crib
How so?
>>
>>151519679
Because his work isn't of the same "caliber" or really "type" as Miyazaki.

Miyazaki makes fantasy stories that are allegorical for real world social/economic/political issues, stories that heavily concern or analyze human nature. He's a guy who lived through WW2 and strives to deliver messages of peace and prosperity in hopes that he can inspire people to better themselves and the world around them.

Kimi no Na wa is supposed to be an entertaining, emotional teenage drama backed by light themes of coming-of-age, dealing with loss, and moving towards the future. It's not derivative or even really inspired by Miyazaki's work. It's just a completely different class and Shinkai is honest and humble in admitting that it is the case and they shouldn't be compared.
>>
>>151520103
He basically birthed the industry and then introduced the cycle of milking the same idea repeatedly because it sells well instead of striving to introduce more creative ideas.

Although I wouldn't really say it was "killing the industry in its crib", since the industry was just budding and people didn't really know where to go until the mid 80s when anime and manga really hit their stridge.
>>
>>151520103
He created the "tradition" of working his staff to the bone for little pay in harsh conditions under strict time pressures. Though he probably didn't have much choice at the time thanks to lack of resources, since he was the pioneer everyone else just copied his model.

It's a fucking mess of a poorly paced movie whose essence is basically shock value that also requires you to have seen a TV series to make even remote sense of it and as someone who liked the TV series even I struggled with it's wacky little twist ending, and no I really don't want a conversation or defense force about it. That's not the point I'm trying to make.

Honestly the entire movie banked on the fanaticism for a property that Aniplex knows how to exploit out of people, it can't stand in a vacuum outside that like at least the TV series could hence that's already damning to it for serious consideration by critics that aren't paid off mouthpieces for Sony/Aniplex (so basically nobody outside of Japan, ANN and Crunchyroll) let alone the Oscars.

Had the chance to see it in a cinema before it pretty much disappeared from around my place. There's still a few showings but at late-night. Easily the best movie I've seen all year, mostly because it's not complete shit like 80% of movies that Hollywood churn out these days. Only reason I went out of my way to see it was because of a youtube video like the one linked but I think it was much longer with scenes of the town exploding.
It's not everyday that a film is so beautifully stunning that it can make someone watch it from seeing one video. If anybody has the video to hand, it would be much appreciated.

Animu is already an normal fag shit anon. Welp, at least japs dont care about Western leftists and their hissy fits. I would really want them to adapt thay medical mango which had an anti-abortion chapter. The salt would be glorious

I'm sure we have some problematic translation there, or else Shinkai just lost his mind.

Sounds interesting, but what manga is it?

>not at Miyazaki's level
>some scenes in the movie are animated at 10 fps

Yup, he's right.

Is there a video or some sort of categorized list that details all the "plot holes" from this film.

Only "plotholes" I've seen were the forgetting about dates/times on cellphones and the void that is a lack of triple-figure cup lolicons for the moe crowd.

HOL UP
U BE SAYIN
A BOY FINNA
fall in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

The Angry Birds creator became this way too.

Maybe Shinkai is genuinely afraid of his money hungry relatives.

>movies always follow the same formula and have nothing other than visuals to carry it
>through sheer stroke of luck he hits it big
>gets compared to an actual decent filmmaker that can produce content that isn't purely good looking
>everyone sucks his dick more than they ever did now
>other less talented studios will rehash this fucking formula for regular TV shows and movies for the next two seasons to cash in on le tragedy memeshows, further plunging anime into the shithole as "boy and girl can't be together" becomes the next fad after low quality idolshit dies down two seasons from now.

Well that anon is a fucking retard and can't see the difference between excessive HDR and lens flares making up 90% of the content to extremely well drawn animation complementing an already solid and enjoyable story.

Family friendly standalone anime movies were the biggest mistake.

I would be worried too. How can he outlive this? He will be forever known as the Your name guy. Everything he does from now on will be on it's shadow. No matter how much he tries. There's no place to go but down. People won't even care about quality, if it doesn't break records it will be labelled as a failure.

just watched the movie

pretty okay IMO, so why it's a big hit again? meme? at least it doesnt pull normal end like 5 cm / second
