Because the big corporations that own the entertainment industry with their modern marketing technologies and advertising strategies have achieved a point where they can brainwash the people into completely buying into whatever fad happens to be happening at the moment and turn what could have been a passing fad into a passing multi-million dollar market. It's ironic that the sheeple are themselves becoming the zombies. Consumerist zombies that will buy whatever is advertised to them, most without ever realizing when they're being advertised to. They'll think it's all just a spontaneous fad. And when they see a post like OP's they'll just take it as some random guy posting on the web and call it a day, never realizing their interest in zombies is being once again reinforced right under their noses. It's a world with a turnaround of the social standings.
It's wishful thinking for a dream world.

A lot of Americans have miserable lives, just like a lot of people in other countries.
Hell, I bet half the people on this board have miserable lives.
The defining feature of a zombie apocalypse is that a virulant deadly outbreak occurs which affects those with high social standings first and foremost.
The higher your social status in society, the more connections you have and the more people you have around you.
Those kinds of people would be the first to die in a zombie apocalypse.
On the other hand, people with low social standings and little connections will be the ones to survive the outbreak and then be the only ones able to fight for their dominance in a new world where all power has now been redistributed.

Despite zombies being a "horror" genre, it's actually only a horror to people with lots of social connections and outdoor activities. For other people, this is a fascinating setting to imagine yourself to live in.

The walking dead is doing well, but beyond that Zombies are largely absent from entertainment media for years. iZombie started off strong, but fell of pretty quick. Beyond those two franchises, it's largely a bunch of B films and strait-to-netflix movies that nobody actually watches.
As always Japan's tends mock the US's 5 years after the fact.
