The six years before Madoka had several shows that were better than it, but the six years since have no had a single one. Is anime in terminal decline?

Ping pong the animation
The rolling girls
Flip flappers

There's a lot of them but you smell a little bit of new anon.
Also i guess your taste is hard to please as well

Madoka still remains my personal favorite show.

This is something I've been thinking about. I think the 2006-2011 period was WAY better than any other period. Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, Steins;Gate, FMA:B, Death Note are some of the big ones, and then there's many others like Clannad, ef, Ano Hana, Usagi Drop, Penguindrum, probably lots others, and even comedies like Lucky Star, etc. etc.

I think it might have to do with how digital animation was only getting common in the early 2000s. Digital is of course much more efficient than cel painted, but it'd also probably have taken a few years for studios to make the transition and get used to the process and adapt fully to it. So that might bring us to around 2005 ish. Maybe it's thanks to them being able to animate easier that led them to wanting to adapt some existing materials, and so they started adapting a lot of things that already existed (as in they have a lot of good material to pick)? And also to have more ambitious goals in general.

Either way, I really liked Ping Pong, Parasyte was pretty good, heck even Attack on Titan... but those shows still don't compare to 2006-2011 for me.

Flip flappers is good but it's not madoka good.
It needed to be more coherent to have that kind of prestige. Cocona and her struggles lacked the kind of overall thread that tied the madoka characters together.
>>
>>151437067
Not him but he might be really focused on that period and won't watch the anime of today though.

Y'know like those people that belive they're still on their best time of their lifes but are pretty outdated
>>
>>151437120
I didn't watch Flip Flappers, but I don't really get what makes Madoka "prestigious," frankly. The characters didn't seem particularly great to me, I'd take something like Bokurano over it any day in terms of engaging with similar themes.

Fact is, Madoka is just a basic show with 1 note characters and simple narrative. The way it's presented makes it engaging to most people, meaning people are blindsided by Shaft visuals and plot twist.
>>
>>151437166
I found Mami rather flat, but that's because she was only in 4 episodes. Kyouko was uninteresting to me. The other 3 were great fun, though.
>>
It wasn't even the best show of the year. Hyouge Mono, Pengindrum, Steins Gate and Anohana were all better.

You must like Reddit:Zero then. I like the discussion threads and shitposting but that doesn't factor in my personal rating of a series.

The only thing that holds water there is Steins Gate
>>
>>151437067
>>151437124

Just to clarify, I obviously named the more popular ones because they are more widely agreed upon to be the good shows. Hence the etcs.

I do like newer anime, but I still haven't seen a show (except for Ping Pong) that really resonated deeply with me.
>>
>>151437380
>A pretentious, grimdark "deconstruction" of a genre that is normally relegated to being kids' stuff is more fondly remembered than the better made, more thoughtful, and actually deep Kunihiko Ikuhara production that came out the same year.

It was bullshit in 1997 and it was bullshit in 2011
>>
>>151437380

I feel like I would have to agree and say Steins;Gate for sure is an overall better show than Madoka, but personally Madoka (and Penguindrum is really close too) is my favorite of them. Especially when you include Rebellion (which I love for everything that it did manage to do despite flaws).

Either way though, it's crazy how there were so many great shows in 2011. Madoka, Steins;Gate, Penguindrum, Ano Hana? Those are all shows that would have each made an entire year for me, but yet they were put all into one at once. Usagi Drop was good too.

I don't like Rebellion as much as I did back when I first saw it. I think it's a step back from the anime.

My favorites list seems to agree there's less good anime after 2011.

But only a little bit. Is it really that bad? Some anime that came out after Madoka:

Steins;gate
Ping Pong
Food Wars
One Punch Man
Re:Zero
Erased
Your Name
A Silent Voice

Maybe exclude S;g since it probably shared one week of airtime with Madoka. And maybe exclude the movies. Still, One Punch Man, Gintama, Log Horizon, Kill la Kill were all worse?

I think that's something you can say; the movie was quite different from the show.

But I think there is a lot that it accomplished, and in any way making a sequel to a complete series is a difficult task.

I love both the series and the movie, but the movie made me like Madoka even more,

This was a particularly interesting analysis that I read recently: http://wrongeverytime.com/2014/07/14/the-rising-tide-madoka-rebellion-and-communal-culture/

It talks about a lot of stuff, but one view point that stood out to me was that you could interpret the beginning of the movie (the "fanservice-y, dragged out, cash grabbing part") as the audience's dream, not just Homura's labyrinth. At least it definitely wasn't Homura's dream, at least in the sense that it would have been different if she made it 100% the way she wanted. And if the movie did end with everyone saving Homura and Madoka saving her with the Law of Cycles (and somehow the Incubators would not be able to observe/steal Madoka, etc.), then that would have been an overly happy ending.

In a way, Homura's selfish desire led to a weird ending, and you could say that selfish desire represents the fans. The fans got the happy world they wanted at the start of the movie, but them wanting an overly happy ending backfired.

Or something like that.

I also love the movie because of how much love they put into the music and animation. It is probably my favorite OST from Kajiura ever, even more so than KnK and PMMM.

I don't know the exact condition of the anime industry, but it looks like a lot of hope was placed on Madoka. It was something rather unique yet still niche to anime.

It's still pretty much my favorite. Sometimes I look forward to new Madoka doujins more than anything.

Only Homura knew of Madoka's existence, so the experiment to control Madoka won't work on others. And yeah, I can see how rebellion has double meanings, ie commentary on the fandom. The movie has sparked some interesting analysis and reactions.

Mami's the only meguca that isn't flat though.
