Shannon Kanon and Beatrice are the same person. They are the child of Kinzo and his daughter Beatrice, who is the child of the original Beatrice, who was an Italian who arrived on Rokkenjima (where Kinzo was based in the war) with gold from fascist Italy. Beatrice, the child Kinzo had with his own daughter, was offered to Natsuhi as a kid since she and Krauss couldn't conceive. Under stress, she pushed a servant who was carrying the kid off of a cliff, killing the servant. Genji, Nanjo, and Kumasawa hid the fact that the kid survived from Kinzo, afraid he would try and have relations with them like his previous child. Turns out, the kid was a boy and had his genitals smashed by the cliff incident and was raised as a girl until he found out the truth after solving the epitaph, which was meant for him to solve so that Kinzo could apologize for his sin. This, combined with Beatrice's love for Battler, who left the Ushiromiya family and came back at a time when she was still on the fence between loving him and George, drove her to plan the murders. In the real world, all the adults solved the epitaph and stopped Beatrice from carrying out her plan, but had a scuffle over dividing the gold. Beatrice reveals to them that Kinzo made a device from war explosives that would blow up the island at midnight if set to the on position.

The way I see it, magic exists yet it doesn't.
All the meta stuff that was shown in each game didn't happen. So Beatrice the Thousand year old witch and her servants and friends are just Yasu's delusions.
On the other hand Bern and Lamba does exist, yet they can't interfere with the real world, so no one knows they exists for real. Kind of like gods watching over the world.

Lots of servants were coming and going before Oct 4 1986 that Krauss and Natsuhi didn't necessarily pay that much attention to. The gameboards are a different and acceptable case because they aren't reality and are constructed purposely. Nanjo, Kumasawa, and Genji knew. Jessica definitely should have known though. We could guess that maybe Jessica and Kanon's relationship was exaggerated in the message bottle game to illustrate a point. If Shannon or Kanon is one of the first to die in his plans, it becomes a piece of cake in a high tension situation. It's a weird scenario for sure, so all we can do is guess about the logistics. Unless one of them does die the first twilight, there's way too little room for him to keep the two separate and out of the eyes of everyone else.

Also, remember that there are accomplices in all the gameboards that are outside of the three that knew (i.e. Eva and Hideyoshi), so we can assume that in the real world if his plans were to go into action, those accomplices would know as well, reducing the number of people that have to be in the dark about it.

I got into it in 2010 I think, thanks to the anime, and when I see how great were the old threads in 4chan about the visual novels, I hate to think I missed that. Also, I got spoiled hard about Yasu and I don't think there are much more mysteries left so I didn't even read the last 2 episodes.

I can't have good Umineko threads and insane theories in 4chan anymore, but at least I would like to read the novels unspoiled and see what would I come up with.

Ep1 being the pinnacle, it was actually very tight, and a good murder mystery.

Then it gets to a point in ep 5-6 when three separate groups are all using misinformation and the story becomes so fucked that there are multiple total resets in canon to sort this shit out. It's completely fucked and a terrible murder mystery, it can't be solved without outside agency.

That and just fuck the meta and all the 4th wall ironic and post ironic bullshit it entails forever. Even managed to ruin Higurashi by association, which is actually impressive.

When you read it again, you have moments like EVA and Battler's final showdown, when she never denied the multiple personality option, that shows that there really were hints to solve the mistery if that's what you care about (but most details about the backstory couldn't be deduced). Also, I'm pretty sure the first episode can't be solved by itself because you lack evidence to discard a lot of suspects. The point was never the mistery (again, as >>151463835 said), if you only care about the mistery and nothing else you got a warning with Erika that you're not supposed to look at it through these lenses.

I think you didn't got the meaning of the "magic" scenes. They were fake but they represented something.

Eva becoming the Golden Witch in Episode 3 represents the fact that, inside the board, she learnt the truth (even if it was because the murdered revealed after her, and she also found the gold). In Episode 5 Battler solves the mistery and because of that he becomes the Golden Witch, which establishes that solving the mistery == being the Golden Witch.

All the meta plot in Ep 6 was Battler showing off what's going on inside Beato's head (and in a certain way flaunting it in front of Erika, who probably just dismissed all the metaplot as bs), the real explanation is that they all faked their deaths to prank Erika but that doesn't mean the metaplot has no meaning or bears no clues.

The meta plot in Episode 4 has Kinzo appearing and being recognized by the family despite him being dead hints at another person being a possible heir of Kinzo, Battler goes as far as stating it with Blue and Beato doesn't contradict him.

In Episode 2 Beatrice appears before Rosa and Maria, hinting at her being a real person.

To be fair, at Episode 02 the rules haven't been completely established so you can't think of Kinzo being dead because he was actually shown alive. I dropped Umineko after Ep8 spoilers came out. But it wasn't until I came back years later when EP8 manga came out that I finally finished Umineko VN after reading it.

Without the manga, I don't think Umineko had a complete ending or at least one that left a good aftertaste.

This is my favorite and the most poignant scene of the series and its manga only.
