Starting with the indisputable example.

>Improved voices.
>Extra flavor and life put into the English lines compared to the dry and boring original Japanese dialogue.
>A mulberry is a tree.
>Even the opening and ending songs are excellent in English.

And they did all of this years before any other English adaptation came close to it in terms of quality.

I haven't watched dubs in a good 15 years probably.

But aside from the obvious acting, dubs have more problems.

What really pissed me off was the really lazy sound editing.

Dub
>Ring ring* character sounds exactly the same through the phone as he does talking right next to you

This

If you haven't noticed, Japanese dialogue is often corny as fuck. It hits the ear wrong to hear direct translations because it just sounds awkward in English. This is why dub companies change and localize lines to make more sense and sound better for a western audience.

The choice is obvious. It's best to read the original script and hear the original voices. This also captures the director's vision more accurately.

>YYH

Good but not great much like the DBZ dub it suffers from "voices should sound like the body they came from" syndrome and Sagat talking to himself. Giving Botan a fake British accent was stupid and was just to make sure her voice was distinct from Chichi. Kuwabara is fantastic, Yusuke and Hiei are good, Kurama is bleh and then you have some oddities like Jin who they gave an Irish accent for no apparent reason.
>>151331910
>Code Geass
That dub is not good. It has probably three great performances in the whole cast with everyone else phoning it in or doing an outright horrid job which becomes obvious once you get to R2 when they pretty much rushed it out. JYB as Lelouch is good and props for him for actually making Lelouch sound like a teenager as oppose to Fukuyama who didn't even try (Nips also pointed this out). Yuri is great as Suzaku and pretty much on par with Sakurai especially in the season finale, Liam O'Brien as Lloyd is great alongside Cornelia and Charles, the rest were either miscast (Jeremiah, Rolo, Mao, etc.) or fucking terrible (Kallen, Nunnally, Shirley).
>>151334928
It was fine the Japanese cast wasn't that good either so it helped a lot. Crispen Freeman puts in a better performance as Holland than Keiji Fujiwara.
>>151335066
It was disappointingly meh despite how much they hyped that show's English debut like the second coming they couldn't at least go all out with the cast as well? The only performance that stands out and makes it worth it is Takarada who makes an already memorable character even more so in English in fact its distracting how good his performance is compared to everyone else.

>I don't mean to imply that jap voice acting is on the same level with english dubs that are truly half-assed
Glad we agree.
Not only are dubs generally performed by nobodies, with plenty of things lost in translation to fit the animation, but they also lack the original voice direction.

If you actually watch a decent amount of anime, you realize that dubs are both rare and unneccessary.

Someone who watches dubbed anime is like the guy who eats at McDonalds in a foreign country.

>>151351526
No, japs can definitely be bad at voice acting.
The issue here is the implication that dubs are watched because they're better than the original.

It either changes the product to be different from the original (and therefore to your liking), or downgrades it with a lack of direction, voice acting skills or translation finesse.

>What are you on?
The amount of anime which are dubbed in the vast ocean of shows and OVAs out there is tiny, hopefully you know this.

>What's wrong with that? It's just food. Are you bad at making analogies?
Are you bad at understanding analogies?
The point is that you choose familiar, comfortable things over experiencing the actual product as it was intended.

I don't choose "familiar" things, I watch the original and then watch dub if I find it good to get different kind of experience with the show. There are people who watch dubs firsthand or never even touch the subbed anime, but that's not the point of the thread.

Why don't you reply to what I have adressed? The topic of this thread says nothing about watching dubs INSTEAD of original. In fact you can only decide if it's superior having watched both. What's wrong with discussing good dubs, which was the original issue you had with this thread?
>>
>>151352155
The analogy is shit because "experiencing it as it's intended" is a valid argument for both dubs and subs. One the one hand, "muh director hand picked nip VAs," on the other "muh listen not read."

True perfection is leaving Ninja Slayer himself with Japanese audio and subtitles, then Dub for everyone else.

This. Baccano is hands down on the the best dubs out there.

I can't take Japanese voice acting seriously. That shit sounds so retarded most of the time.

The 1999 one isn't that great but it has a few decent performances Brendan Hunter's Hisoka is the stand out but the 2011 anime's dub is infinitely better than the 1999 version for the most part.

It's not perfect, Cristina Vee's Killua is a bit iffy but Erika Harlacher's Kurapika and Erica Mendez's Gon are on point.

I agree with these criticisms on the YYH dub a lot actually, but I'm curious, what do you consider a great dub? I would argue YYH is better than DBZ's dub (though DBZ as source material in my opinion develops stronger characters than YYH imo, i think funimation is a big reason why YYH was so appealing), and ultimately i'd call it "great" in the grand scheme of dubs.

I guess it could be argued Cowboy Bebop is a better dub, for example, but they also had an easier time I feel. Not to say dubbing a shonen is harder by default, but I will say more characters = more of a pain in the ass to deal with, so I'd still put YYH on the same level ultimately.

what do you think, /a/?

>the rest were either miscast (Jeremiah, Rolo, Mao, etc.) or fucking terrible (Kallen, Nunnally, Shirley).

None of those were bad performances except Nunnally's. You just don't like the Code Geass dub, that's all.
>>
>>151337818
His Nero is good though.
Sure he mostly shouts
>KYRIEEEEEE
But it's still good
>>
>>151363731
>None of those were bad performances except Nunnally's
Nope they were all bad. Karen Straussmen can't act for shit (remember Badass mother?) and Shirely's VA had this distracting lisp in her lines.

>You just don't like the Code Geass dub, that's all.
Because its not a good dub despite a few strong performances.

Fucking dubs of truth

>what do you consider a great dub?
Not counting Disney dubs since they'll be too easy despite the controversies I generally believe their FMA dub is great along with their Baccano dub since they go well and beyond their usual output. YYH is better tdub than DBZ by virtual as being a more faithful script but it has the same problems as DBZ in terms of cast rotation so the tend to share the same weaknesses with the key difference being that YYH has overall more consistency while DBZ is more "you'll get use to it". I mentioned that the only difference between the voices of Botan and Chichi is that the VA gave her a fake British accent so you pretty much get a lot of actors from DBZ playing different character by adding in annoying tics once again going back to Jin and his Irish accent. This is not so much a problem with Baccano (even though it has a lot of fake accents) because its overall more consistent and better acted despite sharing most of the same VAs. And once again the DBZ problem of "character voices should match their bodies" hit with Kurama this time around taking a fairly unique voice in the original and making him incredibly bland and boring with his English voice. Justin Cook's Yusuke and Chuck Huber's Hiei are nothing like their original voices respectively but they give memorbale performances by giving their characters a certain edge that's appealing while Kurama's VA doesn't even try.

thank you, this is genuinely quite insightful.

if you don't mind, could i ask about your opinion on the Disney dubs? I'm assuming you're talking Ghibli and such

The English Noel Vermillion voicing Killua? That must sound awkward.
>>
I know there are a handful of seiyuu's who are in a lot of anime too but how can dubfags stand literally the same 12 people in every worthwhile show? Even if Kana Hanazawa is in everything at least the rest of the cast will be different.

>Implying manga not becoming profound when written English becomes Kanji means that Japanese voice acting is of a higher tier and typically carriers more skilled and appropriate emotion than what can be found in English dubs.
>>
>>151366014
Yes basically anything from them and G-Kids when they get Ghibli movies. Despite their pedigree their dubs are not all homeruns but they;re better than the vast majority of anime dubs by sure virtue of getting actual actors to do them now this doesn't necessarily mean that they're all good because of this.

YYH is a decent dub but a lot of people only view it as superior because they grew up with it.

If it aired today you wouldn't be saying that.

Oh they just did the Castro episode.

Hisoka's voice is too 'nice'. He's like Him except less gay but also less intimidating.

But Machi is voiced by the English Maya from Ace Attorney, p. good.
>>
>>151328396
YYH had great voice acting for the main 4-5 characters, but was terrible outside of them compared to the Japanese dub. I prefer the japanese voice actors largely apart from Yusuke probably.

Everytime I hear the opinion that the dub is better than the original I can't help but think that people focus too much on the main characters. The side characters are part of the show too.
>>
>>151372653
The main characters and the script itself are better though. The side characters alone can't compete with that.
>>
>>151372399
>they don't bother to voice the post-credits scenes

what logic is this

>>151372653
The only badly voiced important side character is Genkau. They really fucked the dog by having that 80 year old grandma try to sound like a young kanojo.
