It's at times like these, when the weather gets cold, and the night comes so early, that I'm reminded of NHK. God, this series was amazing, and had a god-tier OST.

How did you like NHK? And...are you going to be spending Christmas alone this year?

I'm going to spend it with my family and maybe my friends.

>How did you like NHK?
shit is the best depiction of being a neet in suicidewatch.
>>
>>151325009

I had seen the first few episodes between changing schools, and was so freaked out by how similar I was to Sato that I dropped it out of discomfort. Only difference between us was I hadn't become a NEET. Well, not yet anyway.

Having picked it up again after getting past that just makes watching it all the more surreal. Is it as good as other people make it out to be?
>>
>>151325439
It really is good. The story and characters are amazing. It's a real look into the lives of people who are lonely, depressed, suicidal or have other serious problems. The music is also one of the best ever created for an anime.

If you're looking for something light-hearted, look somewhere else. This is the story of a NEET with no goal in life who tries and fails on so many levels to overcome his problems. The series also looks at other characters with different problems. It's a very "real" series, if you know what I mean.
I consider it a masterpiece. Though some will tell you it has terrible animation in some episodes, and though that's true, it's the story, characters and music you should really be there for.
>>
Great series, got to rewatch it on time or another.

TN: another stands for /a/, not her.

These episodes made me quit WoW and wonder why the fuck I'd spent 10-15 hours a day on it.

I'm not doing anything better with my time but you know, it's kinda something I guess.
>>
>>151325667

I'll probably stick around then, I like light hearted stuff, but sometimes I just want to look in the mirror and reflect.
>>
>>151326038
That is what this series is perfect for. If you hang out in these threads from time to time you'll see what NHK has done for some anons. Some have been thrown down in deeper despair, some have used it to crawl out of their lonely ways and have accomplished things. It's really interesting. It's why I love NHK threads.

Whenever I get a bit sad and melancholy I listen to this song and sort of wallow in my mood for a while. It sounds depressing but I really like to do it, sort of puts things into perspective

Having mental illness that I was diagnosed with 7 years ago, that is the worst during the winter. I don't have many great memories of this season, except time spent with my family. Now, with my mom's sudden/violent death less than a week ago, this is the worst time of the year, and she loved this time of the year.. Definitely made me think of bundling up in a blanket and re-watching Welcome to the NHK
>>
I like it in the same way I liked Requiem for a Dream.

It's a good series that made me seriously reconsider my life, and I never want to watch it again.
>>
>>151325009
No anime has gotten me depressed other than this.

>>151327975
Same. I've only watched it once so far. It's fucking great, though.

I really wanted to like this anime, but the caricatured situations that happens in the course of the series pull me off of the anime "vibe". There are a couple of moments that I was looking to the screen thinking "no way that will happen in real life", e.g. Misaki time spent with the MC, how stupid they are in the Ponzi Cour, the whole suicide travel, and others that I don't remember now. I don't recognize them as humans like us...

btw, what do you guys enjoy in the show?
>>
>>151328305
I enjoyed seeing characters dealing with their complete despair. Change of pace from your usual anime.
Also, there's a very good reason Misaki spends time with Satou. I think you're better off reading the novel or manga.
>>
>>151328305
The emotional aspect is realistic though, and that's what matters.
>>

>>
>>151328305
>>151325009
Read the novel, guys. It's so much better despite the anime being good as well
>>
I'm gonna spend my Christmas re-watching this show.
>>
I thought the anime was largely really boring, especially during the pyramid scheme arc and video game episodes. It felt like the entire show just wanted to show off how shitty the main character is and hope we relate to it, instead of having a more gripping narrative and slowly turn the MC from a hikkineet into someone who is striving towards being a productive member of society,

Instead the entire plot was solved by cutting off the MC's money so he has to work for food. Pretty retarded if you ask me.
>>
>>151330982
You completely missed the point then. There was never gonna be a happy ending. That's the entire point.
>>
>>151331047
Doesn't mean he can't be set on the path of redemption. I think the anime set it up pretty well. He meets tons of people who have their own problems and it would be perfectly reasonable for him to realize he actually wasn't the center of the world and to stop being so arrogant and set out to find a job on his own volition so he can support himself.

Hell, isn't that what the manga or novel does?
>>
Here it is, people. This is no hyperbole. NHK is the worst anime of all time. It is one of the worst pieces of media you can conjure. A reality show about the Kardashians must be better than this. Pathetic YouTube parodies are better than this. In order to make something worse than this, you’ll need to let Ian Watkins brag about his pedophilia in the Lostprophets album that was never made.

There is no correlation between artistic quality and morality, as Lostprophets have displayed. Yet, you have to wonder what kind of awful person would subject the world to this. Worse, what kind of person would make an anime whose purpose is to make fun of anime watchers? Imagine if your ordinary school bully made an anime. There is so much wrong that I want to rant about it, shoot up heroin and watch Texhnolyze. That one was also bad, but it looks like a better version of Digimon Tamers over this, and Digimon Tamers is already brilliant.
The anime isn’t really about the pains of being a shut-in. The conflict is solved in a few minutes around episode 23 – no psychology, no development. Suddenly there’s a problem, so Satou walks out and he’s no longer a hikkie. Rather, it’s about the joys of conformity, how the world is a beautiful, welcoming place and you all should stop watching perverted anime and get in line. That’s ironic, coming from a country where people ‘conformed’ and let the military run the Rape of Nanking and Unit 731.
is a ridiculously optimistic anime that refuses to acknowledge the world isn’t a happy happy joy joy place. Characters who feel bad are mocked or written as irrational morons. As we know, everyday other people walk to others’ doors and offer help. What? It didn’t happen to you? That’s odd. Perhaps this anime isn’t so realistic. Perhaps what makes something truly unrealistic is not things that cannot happen. , it’s when the meaning underneath the symbols – in this case, the optimism – is completely detached from reality.

You guys heard about this Gatebox thing? Seems like it'll be a big thing in Japan.
It's basically a sort of box you plug in and there's a digital waifu in there a la Miku. She greets you in the morning, wishes you goodnight in the evening. Welcomes you home, etc. You can text her during the day and she'll reply.

It's one of the most tragic things I've ever seen, yet I sort of really, really, really fucking want one. Here's the trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkcKaNqfykg

Do you think you'd feel less lonely? Or would you actually realise how completely pathetic it is and change your ways? I'm so conflicted. I am seriously considering saving up for one of these things.
>>
>>151332199
You know there is a less expensive way of curing loneliness, right? It's called meeting people
>>
>>151332199
Dude, if I can customize that thing to feature my waifu, or at least change her appearance to make it look close to her I'd be all over that shit. Fuck what's become of me?
>>
>>151332351
But anon, most people are 3D.
>>
>>151332199
I have ASMR youtubers to whisper me goodnight, I think I'll stick to that. They also whisper in my ear and lick my ears clean and stuff. Much better than a digital waifu with like 5 recorded lines.
>>
Hello, I came into this thread to say I despise Satou and Welcome to the NHK by extension.

He does find a part-time job in the anime, it`s more or less based on the author`s life.
It`s a shame he basically gave up after writing the whole thing.

>>
>>151325009
I felt that it was a sad show about sad people; that felt real to me and that's why I enjoyed it so much. All of the characters had struggles that I think were really shown as they are in real life, and even though we had a "happy" ending the reality is that there is still so much wrong with them, but they have to continue on for their own reasons.

I will be with my father mostly, and we might go bowling or see the new star wars. My mother invited me to something Christmas day, but I am only spending the minimal amount of time that I need to with that snake. As such I will only be eating dinner with her on Christmas Eve.
>>
>>151325009

Fuck that show. The only thing I "learned" from it is that you should just fall into the given mold of your life, and working hard doesn't really change anything. Not a single character in this show gained anything from trying to change their lives or themselves. You can pretend glasses-kun got a good end, but he ultimately just lost against life. Cute wife or not, he was still inherently a failure.
>>
>>151337697
It's literally a show about failures. They weren't going to get better. Some of us don't get better. It may not have been what you wanted but it was what some people needed
>>
>>151337697
That's why it's explicitly stated that living life as a hikikomori is a luxury

I'll atleast be spending it with my family and older brother.
>Tfw atleast slightly handsome 7/10 IRL but too socially stunted to woo most girls.
I should just do porn or something. It still won't give me the satisfaction of being in an actual relationship.

Also yea NHK is awesome. I might give it a binge watching on one of my days off along with Amagami to really smash in those tfwnogf feels.

You'll feel a wave of disgust for yourself as soon as you hear the first repeated line. Especially if it's in a day-to-day thing like a text. You're talking to a bot, not even sophisticated to qualify as AI as it's all just pre-recorded messages on a avatar of your cutest waifu.
I was woo'ed once too by the technology of having Miku and the like in meatspace.
But in the end 2D is meant to stay 2D.
If you really need something like a pick me up I'd sooner recommend Tawawa-tits in the morning than this.

kek nhk is all about how if you do get a gf nothing changes and youre still fucked. note how when he gets a gf it is discovered that women are real people and are just as fucked and dont help you at all, then he has to get a job at the end and start to work through his problems the hard way/actually help them way.

>third time watching college student addicted to drugs
>fourth time watching hiki addicted to drugs
>fifth time watching hiki addicted to drugs with gf thats also a hiki

fuck the manga novel is the best

and thats exactly why its so great.
its actually realistic, unlike just about every other anime. a proper slice of life show.
>>
manga<novel<anime. Simple as that, manga is absolute shit. It made Misaki a dickhead and gave the entire story like no meaning at all

I have only read the manga, how does the anime compare to it? I can hardly remember anything about this, aside from reading for only a day, I was also young back then; I'm quite scared about how I'll take this work 5 or so years later now that I'm an 'adult'.

I think Welcome to the NHK is way more symbolic than it appears to be at first glance. I'd go so far as to lump it together with the likes of, for example, Serial Experiments Lain and such. And what's the deal with people drawing depressing conclusions from it? It's a very optimistic watch if you think about it.

All of the characters that surround Satou are, more or less, representations of his past, present and future. Hitomi - the past - from which he inherited the habit of placing the responsibility of his failure to the outside world; Kaoru - the present - the allure of escapism and rejection of the real world; and finally Misaki - the mysterious and difficult-to-understand future.

Being a passive individual, Satou allows himself to be pulled apart by Hitomi and Kaoru, the end result being him standing over the cliff and contemplating suicide. Clearly, sticking to what the past and present had to offer, and brushing aside his future, led him to a possible tragedy. I think this was the turning point of the show - Satou finally understood that Misaki was the only "person" that had his best intentions in mind, or in other words, he understood that the future was the only thing someone in his position had to turn to.

From this point on, the negative influences of Hitomi and Kaoru are being eliminated from Satou's life. Hitomi becomes pregnant and Kaoru enters his family's business. What I found incredibly amusing was the way show downplayed whatever "issues" Satou (and by extension, Megumi's brother) was dealing with. When his mother wasn't able to support his NEET lifestyle anymore, what did Satou do? He simply went out and started working. The point was, I think, that much of Satou's problems were simply in his mind. Whatever difficilties he was dealing with did not come even close to the possibly of being homeless and starving.

Truly a slightly misunderstood masterpiece.
>>
>>151349989
>that much of Satou's problems were simply in his mind.

The same could be said for most of the mental illness in this world.
>>
>>151325009
This will probably not be an appreciated reply but whatever.

NHK was a fucking masterpiece in my opinion. I watched it years ago when I was 20 and it really hit me hard.

In the five years that followed up to now, it (among other things) gave me the inspiration to better myself and keep improving. It's sometimes a slow, tedious and frustrating process but right now I feel like I'm in a positive spiral and things are getting better all the time.

I usually spend Christmas alone on /a/ (last 7 years), but this year I'm going to a girl I've been getting to know better. We're going to cook together and watch steins;gate.

What I want to say to everyone who felt they could relate to Satou is that It really is never too late to try and change. Try and see the beauty in the world (anime can help with this, for example Aria) and try to be a better you. Do it for yourself in the first place though and not for others. Being a better person will then automatically attract other people if that's what you seek.
>>
This show haven´t made me change my life or think about my life in a different way...

I envy the MC. I would love to become a hiki and live with my stuff in my own room and don,t give a fuck about anything... But there is a lot of people who needs me because they are old or have depression and I just can´t let them down.

Satou has a lot of problems (because he is stupid, basically) but I preffer to fight with my own stupid problems than solve everyone elses problems.
