Yes, that's why Coalgirls is a meme. They barely compress the video and don't compress the audio at all despite the fact that even a little compression can drastically reduce filesize with little to no loss in quality (especially in audio, anime audio can easily be compressed with no audible change in quality and typically isn't even recorded in quality that warrants using lossless FLAC).

There's essentially no point in using their releases unless they're the only ones available because if you REALLY care about quality you could download the raws and .ass or just buy the physical BDs. People just circlejerk over them because higher filesize = superiority, apparently.

The group I work in seems to have found a balance that no one has complained about yet.

For our BD releases, we cater the 1080p version to people who demand the highest quality to an irrational degree which means 10-bit video and FLAC audio. The resulting file sizes aren't too far off from BloatGirls. Most members of our group consider such releases to be a fucking joke anyway since almost all shows are produced in 720p and just upscaled for the BDs.

But for the 720p version, we just use 8-bit video and AAC audio. It looks and sounds just fine and can even be played on practically any device.

This seems to be doing a really good job of appeasing both the nitpickers and the people who want reasonable file sizes. I'm surprised more groups don't do this sort of thing.
