What is it about mecha that keeps western casual/normalfags out?
>>
Because most decent mecha is over a decade old at best and stuff like Gundam has too many series for newfags to be interested.
>>
It's just fucking robots.
>>
The same reason every single popular show is a cop drama
>>
"Muh Realism".
>>
>>151299516

I always figured they hated echii most.
>>
Because it's harder to self insert as a pilot because their vehicle of power is a robot instead of being incredibly powerful for no rhyme or reason.
>>
>>151299578
Elaborate.
I don't get it.
>>
>>151299632
Ecchi shows are actually pretty popular, considering they tend to get licensed/dubbed fairly frequently.
>>
It's a travesty. They made the mayor of Ankara demolish that 20-ft tall Zaku he built with taxpayer money and replaced it with a fucking dinosaur.
How is a dinosaur supposed to defend Zeon from terrorism?
>>
>>151299637
To be fair, some of them have the "pilot connects with his mecha and destroys everything" power up.
You'd think it's easier when the MC is a normal(by anime standards) human bean outside of it.
>>
>>151299826
>how is a dinosaur supposed to defend Zeon from terrorism?
You can't protect Zeon against itself.
>>
Someone post the "I don't like mechs but" chart
>>
>>151299547
They can hop on AU stuff.
>>
>>151299579
This, a lot of excuses I've seen for uninterest or hating mecha is from people who go "but tanks are more realistic" when realism isn't the point.

Others just associate mecha with transformers and automatically assume it's childish, and this isn't really helped by the color schemes.
>>
>>151299516
>it's made to sell toys
Is the most common thing they say, meanwhile most popular unicorn mech don't have and won't have MG gunpla because plastic bent under it's own weight. Also they see no irony whatsoever in buying tons of shit with Rem on it.
>>
>>151299579

they just want tanks

PR only made twice more of it's budget, and most of that came from chinks. Transformers I'll give, but it's mostly because of childhood nostalgia and aggressive marketing.

Mainstream shonen designs are pretty retarded too.
>>
Because muh politics. Also for gundam sheer amount of series and the high episode count for each is probably intimidating
>>
>>151299516
The designs. It's in an unsatisfying middle ground that puts off those who both love and hate big weapons and military stuff. The west, or at least a lot of the anglosphere, want what they love about machines in this kind of stuff. There was also a: why not just watch a regular battle shounen? question that was posed in one of these threads, when the mecha combat is too out there.

>>151301354
This is true but it doesn't have the penalty of hitting some culture's demographics who love robot stuff the wrong way.
>>

>>
>>151301242
PR no. Most of its money was made in Asia (Mostly China) and in the US it was slow to build up sales. The primary issue was that it had such a huge budget that it was very hard to make a profit off of it.

Too many series, hard to know where to begin with Gundam.
>>
It's like...it has so many tropes and so much navel gazing by the people who grew up on it that they can't actually see how silly it is.
That they don't have any new blood or ideas coming into the stagnant yet profitable genre.

To that end, it's not as awesome and exploited as it should be.
Unless they honestly go balls deep with the tech and stop jerking off the old guard and mech geeks it will be forever in it's still moderately profitable ghetto.

This is more true to reality than the former statement only if you consider the boomer generation. They simply assume cartoons = 4kids, which is generally true since anime is made mostly for Japanese teenagers, with few exception.
American youths are far more exposed to manga and animes and like them.

UC Gundam is fucking dumb at times. Aspects of the technology and how/why things happen require additional side materials to understand the outcomes of some events.

Some characters go full retard, lack of spying/optical records (cameras and security would solve so many problems).

And general 'realism' things of how a 80T biped would rip itself to pieces. With how quick these things are portrayed, just turning around would rip the machine to pieces.

Oh god help me get through ZZ and into CCA. Character decision making capabilities have been severely compromised and Char's a whole other person in CCA, gone completely insane with the 'Get off the earth, you're killing it', crap.
>>
>>151305042
You managed to get through ZG and 0080 and you are having problems getting through ZZ? How did you manage this? ZG and 0080 are both pretty bad on these fronts.

I put ZG gundam on break and picked up Gundam Seed. I'm not sure what I am doing to myself or why I hate myself this much.
>>
>>151305327

Aspects of ZG were great others not so much. Very mixed feelings on it. Enjoyed the OVAs from 79-ZG enough. JUST. is the best way to explain it. I've watched much of the AU that I just want to get through all of UC/late UC to complete the core aspect of the franchise.
>>
>>151301290

The insanity of the 'get off the earth' in Gundam never gets explained or looked at very well. It's mostly just textual side materials. Like holy shit, if there's barely 2b left on earth and most of them are poor fucks who can't afford to get off earth, how are they doing to pollute it (since pollution.overpopulation were driving factors in 'get off the rock').

Lobbing nukes around and throwing a bunch or large rocks only exacerbate the very problem leaving was meant to solve. Zeeks are always full retard.
>>
>>151300247

There is an air of childish toys from it though. Hundreds of models to collect, many do transform or have plug-in like capabilities.
>>
I don't know who was more insane in CCA, Char for dropping asteroids on Earth or the Federation for giving him another asteroid just because he said he wouldn't stop it on Earth.

You guys are implying mechs are popular in Japan or something.
More popular than in the west sure but mecha anime and games have not been popular in Japan for a long time now, it's a genre that is mostly appreciated by a much older generation. Kids these days simply don't care for giant robots anymore. They're more into power armor like Iron Man these days.
>>
>>151307664
Powered armor can be cool, but it's not as versatile for storytelling as giant robos.
>>
>>151304456
>You've got the rationale backwards. They have deluded themselves into thinking that they are not allowed to enjoy anything that kids enjoy. It's fucking mindboggling stupid.

C.S. Lewis got it right. He said that the proof of maturity is when you stop giving a shit about looking like an adult.

>When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
>>
>>151299516
>Gundam
>Not entry level
>>
Can't get over the length of most series. Casuals would rather watch hamstershit or one punch man type of shows that have no overarching plot, but are just "fun" or "comfy" or whatever the casual justification is now for an anime being objective shit but they still unironically enjoy it.
>>
>>151299579
It true though. There 's no point in making a giant robot when we already have tanks and jets.
>>
>>151304456
Yeah, they'll denounce something like mecha as childish and then go off to watch the latest Disney/Pixar or superhero movie. It's weird.
>>
>>151308021
Does that mean you can't enjoy giant robots just because they're fictional? Does something not being super realistic mean its childish and stupid?

Its fiction for a reason.
>>
Westerners wank to muh realism and mecha greets them with motherfucking giant humanoid robots instead boring tanks or boxes on the legs.

>>
>>151308194
I wouldn't mind so much if not for the fact that most western stuff treats realism as an aesthetic rather than a commitment to research and care in writing and presentation. That, and the mindset that something being 'unrealistic' is inherently bad or a failure of the storyteller.

It doesn't make sense even in anime.
>>
Because Gundam is very inaccessible and 0078 is greatly dated in many aspects despite some fans claiming otherwise. AU Gundams often aren't as good as UC. Seriously, whoever gets lured in by Unicorns pretty design and animation is instantly turned away when they realise they need to watch at least ~100 episodes of very dated shows that don't have Unicorn or Thunderbolt's visual appeal just to understand the story.

I think the best way to lure the western audience in would be a high quality remake of 0078 that doesn't try to reference too much side materials. I fear much more than just the animation would need to be redone for this to be a success though which might off put some older Gundam fans making it a risky strategy.
>>
>>151308734
>Gundam is very inaccessible
This isn't it, normalfags as making up IBO, just like they did with 00 and SEED
>>
>>151299516
The impression I got is that it's simply not the trendy genre, that's all. Outside of major franchise like Gundam, mecha anime simply isn't in vogue. The current popular ones are stuff like isekai/reincarnation with vid game mechanics, so that's the one that gets plenty of advertising. Thus, that's what the casual viewers know of. They sure aren't going to try and dig out the lesser known works.

eva is probably the first "mecha" anime people turn to because of it's legendary status. They watch it, get mindfucked hard and decide that mecha is trash
>>
>>151308777

I would say these show's fall significantly short to UC though. 00 is the least believable of all the Gundams while it tries to take itself incredibly seriously. SEED's setting definitely had potential but is ruined by a terrible protagonist that appears to be fighting for the wrong side and worthless animation.

And IBO, dropped this show early on so can't comment on it too much but I wasn't very fond of it.

The only one of those shows that I consider to have had widespread success is Voltron Legendary Defender and it's guaranteed a second season anyway because of that's how Netflix structures their original shows. The only people in the West who consistently watch mecha shows are the people who already like them. Legendary Defender would've be another blip on the radar if the normies weren't drawn in because of the ATLA/Korra staff and you know it's their first mecha because on twitter you can see them complaining about the gattai sequence taking too long and being 'like Sailor Moon' while all the /m/fags are screaming that there wasn't enough fused Voltron and they relied on the individual Lion units too much.

I feel like Patlabor 3 would actually be the best introduction to the series if someone was really averse to the idea of watching mecha.

They think that most mecha show is more about the mecha than the pilots' drama. Or so that's what I thought before watching 0080 war in the pocket.

It would be a shithouse introduction to Patlabor specifically. Most of the IP is slice of life and comedy in a fairly upbeat and positive fashion.

Why are the nips not working on functioning war mechs right now?

Mechs are shit IRL and we already have somethings better.

>stuff like Gundam has too many series for newfags to be interested
This. I love Gundam, but it was a long time after I started watching anime that I started getting into it - the sheer number of series is extremely offputting, and the number of AU timelines only worsen that.

It would be better if they'd stick to one thing for a number of years instead of clogging things up with yet more reboots.

Cool, a moving statue. How's that the same as real mecha anyway?
