I got the impression that the storyboards for 11 and 12 were over-sized, hence why in the tv broadcast they ended up being cut too quickly and with an awkward distribution of animator effort.

It's a common mistake for new directors to misjudge how much screentime any particular cut might take, and end up these sorts of issues. Too many big ideas to fit into 24 minutes and no clear idea of what can afford to be cut down to fit it all.

To be fair, it IS good. These past few episodes have been a let down but they don't stop the show overall from being exceptional.

I'd rate this season as a whole well above average. Most of the things I watched through to the end were the best shows I've watched all year, but none of them still really stand up in comparison to Flip Flappers. It was just too good, which is probably, inevitably why it simply couldn't sustain the transition from episodic format to concluding arc gracefully. It's a stumbling block that's compromised countless shows before and the worst part about seeing it happen again here is the fact that all of the misgivings I've had since episode 2 about the show being undermined in its final act ended up being true.

There were exactly 120 of them. I seriously doubt they were rejected.

They were deliberately played out of order, though. There's a few shots of clearly epilogue frames played early on and battle ones mixed throughout. There's even a few that are obviously meant to be shown sequentially, but are spread out in the preview sequence. Most of the storyboards are only onscreen for a single frame, too.

I'm working on compiling them all into a single image now. Of note is the fact that we see Papika de-age back to being a baby.

Next season is worse.

Flip Flappers is a shining example of the crass commercialization of television prohibiting the individuality of animators and artistic expression. The mechanical forcefed narrative and decided focus on character drama specifically has opened up the show's flaws more than ever. The characters are blank slates with little to no expressions or personality beyond being caricatures from the Precure franchise. The fantastical setting let the show shine through the effects/action animation while covering up the lacking character acting but that's been gone now since episode 10. The flow of events is so amateur, there is no impact or emotional weight behind anything that is happening right now but the creators aren't even aware of this. They actually believe they are exploring meaningful coming of age themes with these skeletal characters while in reality this is just a trite and generic sci-fi story, possibly the biggest disappointment of the year and an eternal mark of scorn on Oshiyama's career.

What they did was to animate in full black and white as a choice, which turned out to cost a lot more than a regular episode would because of all the black ink they ended up needing.
