This shit occurred because the primarily teenage socially starved anime fanbase at the time is incapable of viewing any emotional interaction between a character with a dick and one with a vagina as anything but romantic.

Ulquiorra was the embodiment of nihilism and emptiness. Orihime was almost the polar opposite. In his duty to watch over her he kept questioning her desire to live, to protect her friends, her love for Ichigo in an attempt to make her feel the same emptiness he does. And he was incapable of understanding how and why characters like Ichigo and Orihime would still cling to hope in the face of a hopeless situation. At the end of it all he had the first budding of understanding how they felt and died.

That was what the interaction was about and nothing else. Ulquiorra was an interestingly deep character in an otherwise mediocre battle shonen.

Their entire 'relationship' was based on Ulquiorra's nihilistic existence. With Orihime it was to have more faith in her self, and to become stronger. With Ulquiorra it was to find something to believe in. Something special he could grasp, which he did get in that single moment.
