I can easily do that actually.
When I read the manga, I noticed that the deeper the protagonists goes into the abyss, the more fucked up things starts happening. I think the author wrote the plot this way on purpose.
Suffering starts when the protagonists reaches level 2, or the beginning of vol 2. Gore shits that hits hard starts happening at level 4. Which is at the beginning of vol 3 if I remember correctly.

Could work in terms of curbing the uncanny valley that afflicts full-scale models I guess.

If the guys who made Bubuki Buranki were doing it I could get behind it, their character animation is pretty stiff but they seem to "get" the tricks that make 2d animation good, so there's room for improvement.

If it's the direction of Ajin I don't think it could work at all, since they have good full-scale rotoscoping then drop it at the facial animations part.

It's extremely fucking grim, which you don't really notice fully at first because of the cutesy art style.

It has absolutely heaps of body horror of almost every variety, and a sort of looming sense of unease because people are literally settled around the edges of a big fucking hole and the further down you go the more corrupted everything is. Creepy cults, orphans, weirdly sexual overtones, general suffering.

That said, the main characters are lively and likeable and it does have humor so it's not just wallowing in misery. It's the sort of contrast that you get in those "magical girls kill people" genre that sprung up recently, but way less obnoxious.

Frankly i'm surprised there's an anime adaptation because unless it's an OVA series there's no chance they'll be able to fully convey what the series is on TV.

He invented this backpack that would allow it's user to bypass the curse of the abyss, and the way it works is by forcing the curse that the user would normally experience onto the cartridge that's inside the backpack. What's inside the cartridges are actually lolis who got literally all of their unessential body parts removed so that they could fit inside the tiny cartridge while being alive, who at the same time got drugged so that they wouldn't feel pain nor fear.

This manga gets pretty fucking lewd at times, just so you know. And while there's clearly some pretty kinky fetishization going on that most normalfags would find disturbing it really does serve to show how extremely unique, personal, and entirely void of boundaries the relationship and blooming love between the two main characters is. Easily one of my favorite romances in a manga I've read in quite a while, the lewdness is just a bonus that punctuates it without coming off as forced. You know that feeling you get when you really want something you can't just get on your own, then find out you're about to get exactly what you wanted sometime soon? I can't begin to describe how happy my heart is right now. I've learned to be cautiously optimistic about adaptations and I'm woefully aware there's probably going to be quite a few things cut out or edited, but all I can think about is how potentially exciting it can be to see if animated well, and even in the worst case scenario it turns out like Berserk '16 it's still guaranteed to generate some desperately needed attention, more discussion and a dedicated thread once a week while airing, and if all goes well enough possibly even complete translations for the manga.
Looks like once again suicide is just going to have to wait, I've got way too much to live for right now.

I like the disturbing horror stuff. And hope the anime doesn't try to get rid of it.

Though I wouldn't have any problems if the anime doesn't have any of the "loli stuff".

Anything with dark themes is going to seem "tryhard" if you're cynical enough. I'm usually the first one to shit on juvenile garbage like Akame ga Kill or whatever but from what I've experienced this story is worlds apart from the usual suffering for the sake of suffering you typically get from ryona fetishists who just want to write something edgy and call it a day.
I can't say much of the story but I can tell you it's every bit as adorable and heartwarming as it is disturbing, and excels in both areas to a remarkable degree to be absolutely sure. Not every author can pull that off without it coming across as crass or ham-handed but in my personal opinion this manga is one of the best examples of how it can be pulled off extremely well. Certainly worth checking out if any of that appeals to you.

It really depends on how much you like the characters. Some people will turn up no doubt just for the horrors this series is largely famous for and get exactly what they wanted, but if you come to adore the quirky characters and their lovable personalities it'll seriously hurt your heart to watch them go through some of the things they do.

From what I've gathered she's one of the test subjects of the guy who looks like a mishmash of Destiny and Bloodborne who is clearly the main antagonist as of right now and the primary source of a lot of people's suffering. He appeared to use her and her friend to gauge decompression sickness which results in various mutations, but for some reason she only turned into a fluffy bunny loli while her friend melted into an adorable little vanilla pudding cuttlefish abomination. Then it looks like he just let her go probably because he was pretty much done with her by that point, and let her take what was left of her friend with her, at some point after that she happens across the two main characters and helps them out.
