What's /a/'s overall opinion of the classic quintessential Yōkai series?Plus which was the most enjoyable animated adaptation? 4th, 5th, or Hakaba?

I'm not super fond of Kitaro as a protagonist. He has too many different abilities that he pulls out of his ass to solve shit. It kills a lot of the suspense. Otherwise, it's a good series.
I do love NonNonBa, though.

Personally I like 3 Street of Mysteries the most of his series. But it's interesting how yokai manage to infiltrate their way through all his series. Particularly during Showa.
It's actually quite hard to describe many more recent series that have genuine yokai (besides maybe Natsume Yuujinchou). Even horror series, by people like Umezu don't really have the same quality to them. Whereas, when I hear yokai, I think Akai Yuki, Fallen Words, maybe Nagai at times or something equally of that time period.

Haven't read 3, Street of Mysteries yet. I'm in the middle of Showa right now. I'll need to check that out sometime.
>>151206855
I prefer this one.
>>151209168
thats one nice crack window.
>>151206855
i wonder if Funimation would ever license the anime for dubbing. Animax did an english dub of 4 and 5 for broadcast back in 2008-2009 and then destroyed the tapes as part of the agreement.
>>151209168
i prefer the 4th one, especially when she turned into an adult in that one episode involving a hindu hair demon for some reason.

I watched some episodes of it back when about 5 episodes of every Kitarou were available on tudou in 240p but the handpicked good episodes nips gave us had fucking good atmosphere and direction in the 4th series, like the daruma-san one. The Obake Nighter movie is good and well-made too.
5th series was too big friends and Kitarou had no personality.
I think Hakaba is the best directed, but it isn't the one I bought.

it's kinda safe that she's the most changed character throughout the whole franchise. well you gotta have that eye candy.

may shigeru mizuki rest in peace
>>151213860
what up with the 1997 manga one? looks rather Neko-Okasan than Neko-Musume
>>151217800
I don't know at all.
I watched a couple of episodes of 60s kitaro once. It was okay for a kids show. The ED was great though.
>>151206855
how long do you guy's think it take for toei to create a new adaptation?
>>151219359
If I were doing it, the plot would start with a computer game company basing a VRMMO on the franchise, and then losing control of the simulation as the yokai come to life inside the game.
>>151219841
so kinda like digimon then?
>>151219841
Mizuki is dead but Toei hasn't shown signs of violently taking over the concept with something like that yet. His doctrine always says that youkai are and have always been everyone.
A reboot of Akuma-kun would be something new, but nowadays it's all about youkai.
>>151220366
It needs to be more horrific than that -- maybe a VR world made for police interrogation in which the suspect remains in the simulated hells until he confesses.
>>151220914
>everyone
Fucking how did I type that.
EVERYWHERE
>>151222140
I have long suspected that people on mass transit are actually undead.
Hakaba has the best op at least.

Via tvtropes/GeGeGeKitaro/Quotes.i heard there's a dub of the first kitaro movie provided by Funimation
I didn't even know anything besides Hakaba was subbed
>>151206855
So, if I wanted to read/watch this series, what would be a recommendable starting place?
I just love youkais in general.
>>151232497
Hakaba Kitarou is sort of the origin story, although features surprisingly few youkai. The most subbed episodes for any of the Gegege series is the OG 1966 series with at least 1-15, and it's enjoyable for its age.

For the manga, check bato.to for Gegege no Kitaro. The first 7 volumes (of 9) or so have been translated.
Saw 水木しげる伝(中) yesterday for $1 in a book store, but passed on it since I couldn't find 上 or 下.
I haven't read any of the stories in English, so I have no idea how faithful the translation is (though I'm sure it's fine). I'm more interested in reading the non-Kitaro works, since Kitaro is simple (and a lot of his other work is certainly not for kids). Showa history is high on my to-buy list.
>>151236155
Is it worth translating the rest of the series? How much of it has been published in English, other than what's been scanlated?
I just looked at the link you posted, and they only translated the first two volumes of the modern five volume set (which was followed by another nine volume set, and that's not even including miscellaneous volumes like 雪姫ちゃん, ベトナム戦記 or 国盗り物語). That's nearly another 25+ years of Kitarou stories.
I'd hate to waste my time if it's gonna be put out officially though.

GeGeGe-no-Kitaro Vol.1-3: KODANSHA BILINGUAL COMICS is all I found.
>>151241624
I had known about pic related, but apparently it just covers the first bunko volume.
I read about Zack Davisson translating the series, and he seemed cool so I'd hate to step on some toes. There are apparently two volumes out a a total 7 volume series already published, but the contents seem scattered as far as I can tell. It's more like a "Best of GeGeGe" collection, and seems to be aimed at kids.

Yeah, that's one of the planned 7 volume series. The stories it mentions in it though were written over three years apart, so there's no order to it.
