There's a lot wrong with the dub script from the perspective of someone really into the series, with it completely changing the character's personalities and the dynamics between them, but precicely because of that it does a good job of attracting causal viewers. Whereas the main characters came of as eccentric and unrelatable in the original Japanese, in the dub they come off as your average faux nerds who're just trying to fit in. Okabe for example goes from a delusional autist who references Norse mythology and abrstract scientific concepts, to a posh nerd who qoutes Portal and Star Wars.

Characters aren't omniscient and they can be wrong about their understanding of time travelling and everything related to it. You need to specify which moment. When did they make claims that contradict their previous claims or others claims, without context or example we can discuss nothing.
The series is not without plot inconsistencies but as far as I'm concerned, the way time travelling work is consistent.
