"Very good day, ladies and gentlemen, from my channel, "Jose's [unintelligible] Kitchen". Today, we're going to be talking about the Cocona, this exotic fruit from the portion of the Amazon in my country, Peru. The Cocona is a citrus fruit, found in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, part of the "Solanaceae" family, and is [unintelligible, possibly "very acidic"] and rich in organic compounds. This is likely due to soil with good drainage properties. It's considered the 'Tomato of the Amazon' and can be prepared as one, as well as mixed with salads. It has high nutritional value and is high in iron, vitamin B5, niacin (B3), as well as calcium, phosphorus, and small quantities of carotene, thiamine, and riboflavin"

Cocona is very nutritious.

>Cocona has been walking through an empty city for hours, trying to find any sign of Papika.
>"Stupid Papika, where the hell did she go?!"
>Cocona didn't even notice that it got dark, but the downpour of a sudden evening shower (夕立) brought Cocona back to her senses. She needed to find some shelter. The nearby building with a bright neon pink sign saying "HOTEL" looked inviting enough. As expected, there was nobody inside, so Cocona quickly snuck into a random room and hit the bed.

>"So, you wanna do something fun, or what?"
>"S-sure!?" Cocona decided to just roll with the flow.

>Both girls were now wearing sheer black dresses, which Papina retrieved from the room's wardrobe.
>"This dress really suits you, Cocona"
>"Y-you too, Papina"
>Cocona looked longingly at the window. Despite her lack of experience, Papina knew she had to take the initiative. She embraced Cocona from the back, pushed her on the bed, and started to caress Cocona's thighs. Cocona didn't try to resist even when Papina ran her hand under her dress and started rubbing her budding breasts.

>Papina was glad her first customer was a girl, she already knew how to make her own body feel good, so she fully dedicated herself to making Cocona satisfied. Cocona completely gave in, being overwhelmed with new sensations. A complete stranger having full control over her, fondling and caressing her defenseless body, it was strangely exciting. Soon, involuntary moans started escaping Cocona's mouth. "aah" "mmh" "haah" "feels good" (気持ちいい). However, just as Cocona started really getting into it, Papina got another idea. "Hold on a second".

>While Cocona was trying to regain composure, Papina took a strange device out of a drawer. It was actually a Magic Wand massager, but Cocona haven't seen such a thing before. "Now the real fun begins!", Papina smirked. She forced herself on top of Cocona, pressed the tool against Cocona's crotch and pushed the button. Only thin fabric of already wet panties separated the vibrating head of the massager from Cocona's sensitive clit. "Iyaaaa", moaned Cocona, "stop it!", but Papina paid no mind to it, exposing Cocona's chest and licking her nipples, which became erect from excitement. "Such a naughty girl, is this your first time?". Cocona could only muster "Mhm", but the question made her think. "First time... with... Papika... Papika! It has to be with Papika!" Meanwhile, Papina was already taking Cocona's panties off, and pushing the vibrating rod against her bare flesh. The pleasure was unbearable and Cocona knew she would climax any second now. "I'll never forgive myself" thought Cocona as she gathered her last strength. "Enough!", Cocona firmly pushed Papina away and rolled to the other side of the bed, trying to catch her breath.

>"Oh well, I tried my best. Sorry if you didn't enjoy the service"
>"No, no, it was nice. It's just that..."
>"All right. So, um, pay up?"
>"... Huh?"
>"It's usually 10000 yen per hour, but since you're not from here it's 50000 yen. Oops, I wasn't supposed to tell this."
>"Actually... I don't have any money..."

>"You gonna pay or what, Kisama!?"
>"I'm sorry, I didn't know! Please forgive me!" Cocona was in tears.
>"If you can't pay, then work it off! Come with me!"
>Cocona was led to another room. "Service one customer, and you're free". Cocona laid on the bed, her face buried in a pillow, dreading the next knock on the door.
>"How could I be so stupid to end up like this? Now I'll lose my virginity to some stranger for sure!"
>However, nobody came that day. And the day after that. Guess Papina was right that there weren't that many customers. The wait was unbearable, and as the days went by, Cocona almost wished somebody would knock. "I just want to see Papika again, no matter what it takes!"

>"Cocona!", the familiar voice greeted her. "I found my lost Cocona!"
>"Papika!" Cocona couldn't believe her luck. "Papika! I'm so glad you came!"
>"I love-love-love Cocona, so of course I did!"
>"Let's run away from here! Let's go home, Papika!"
>"I'd like to, but..."
>"What, Papika!?"
>"They take money upfront now, and I sure hope I didn't spend a week selling onigiri on the street for nothing."

It does share a few attributes with it, but genre isn't one. Flip Flappers isn't much of a magical girl show.
>>
>>151198853
I sincerely don't know what definition of Magical Girl you could be using that wouldn't apply here. What's the missing criteria?
>>
>>151198853
>>151198800
I've made three already and it's hard to capture all of FLFL with a single image. This Madoka one is meant to capture the yuri and tragic elements. If you have better idea just make one.
>>
>>151198853
It has a lot of mahou shoujo elements even if it is structurally different from the norm
>>
>>151198896
That's because these aren't about capturing the entire show, they're about creating a punchline. That's why the massive WEGs filled with every individual aspect are stupid.
>>
>>151198800
>this anon hasn't realized Papika is stuck in a time loop yet
>>
>>151198887
>>151198938
If you have to classify Flip Flappers as anything I guess you could go with magical girl more than anything else, but I wouldn't normally call it "a magical girl show" and really it doesn't fit neatly into one genre.
>>
>>151198947
I ain't making giant WEGs and distilling the theme of the show in one image is always superior than a random punchline.
>>
>>151198887
There's a difference between a show that has girls and magic in it and a Magical Girl show. FF has a few of the genre trappings (henshin etc), but it doesn't really lean on them any more than it does on a ton of other things, so I wouldn't put it firmly in the genre.

Like, is LWA magical girl? Luluco? Kyousougiga?
>>
>>151198947
>That's why the massive WEGs filled with every individual aspect are stupid.
The only one that ever worked was the first one, which was that one big one for Madoka. That's because that was part of the joke. Everything that's tried to copy it since completely misses the point of why it was made in the first place.
>>
>>151198991
Based on what definition? I just want to know what you consider to be necessary and sufficient for a show to be a Magical Girl. I would call any show with young girls magically transforming and gaining powers to fight against their foes a Magical Girl show.
>>
>>151199069
>tfw people copy your post almost word for word months later

>>
>>151199069
I think the best WEG right now would be one that JUST had the EoE/Mimi 'shop in the last panel and no feels/image macro shit - if that 'shop wasn't so fucking terrible, that is.
>>
>>151199067
yes yes and yes
>>
>>151199084
The difference is that Flip Flappers isn't focused on the magical girl aspect. It's more concerned with Cocona and Papika's relationship and the adventures that they go on for most of it.

Collecting the fragments, transforming and fighting, etc. are all just accessory to that.

In most other magical girl shows a big part of the plot is BEING a magical girl, and what that entails. Cocona and Papika aren't traditional magical girls.

So yeah, Flip Flappers has some (even a lot) of magical girl elements in it, but that doesn't mean the whole package can easily just be labeled as magical girl.

It's like the difference between 'a yuri show' and 'a show with yuri in it'. Kannazuki no Miko is a yuri show. Madoka, despite a huge point of the plot being Homura is in love with Madoka, is just a show with yuri in it.
>>
>>151199067
I don't recall LWA or Kyousougiga have a repeated transformation sequence. Luluco is an odd case since it's more sci-fi than fantasy, and a parody on top of that. I'd have to think more on that one.
>>
>>151199251
And FF only did its transformation once in full, and I think like two times more in extremely abbreviated form. In 11 episodes so far.

That's a pretty bad argument.
>>
If you had to summarize what this show is about, how would you do it?

Two girls, Cocona and Papika, go on adventures through fantastic worlds (every episode a different setting) to collect these things called fragments. The first 2/3rds are primarily about Cocona and Papika's relationship, especially exploring Cocona's feelings towards Papika, with several other mystery elements going on in the background. In the final 3rd more and more things about these mystery elements come to light and shit gets real.
>>

I'm not wholly convinced it's a coming of age story. It doesn't seem to be really focusing on the transition from youth to adulthood. Some of the things it focuses on, like Cocona's indecision, can be used in those stories, but without the specific focus on the internal conflict that comes with confronting your age, I don't think it fits.

Coming of age or accepting change is likely a trivialization of what the show is trying to convey. Probably because the show is making it too subtle but if you pay close attention you can observe severe psychological issues with Cocona even in ep 1. After ep 6 its psychological theme became more apparent. If anything this show started from a similar setting of traumatized children as in NGE but instead traversed a positive healing path.

Flip Flap's ending being about getting away from your parents would be pretty silly. Cocona never met her parents. Even worse, her only family turned out to be a robot spy.
It should, or at least I'd like it to, be about what family is, and how family supports you as you grow up. Clearly Mimi and Salt have as much to learn about parenthood as Cocona has to learn about becoming an adult.

>You can craft a specific definition, it doesn't have to be a six word sentence. You can even lay out a list of things that must or must not be present.

But that's not how genres work. You don't start with a checklist and then the Genre Definition Committee gives your show the Genre Seal of Approval. Things belong in genres if they feel like they belong in that genre, and that's not something you can "prove", only debate. And just by looking at this thread, you can see that Flip Flappers being a mahou shoujo anime is at least debatable because it's one in some aspects but doesn't fully fit the formula as laid out by the standard bearers of the genre.

Is it more of a mahou shoujo than not at all, e.g. Fune wo Amu? Yes.
Is it less of a mahou shoujo than Matoi (which itself isn't exactly standard)? Also yes.

Cocona:
>Neglected children display attachment disorder symptoms and eventually form insecure attachments to their caregivers as a result of caregivers' unresponsive interactions. This disturbed attachment to their primary caregiver alters future relationships with peers by becoming emotional and physically isolated from others reducing the likelihood of forming emotional connections. Moreover, as a result of their past maltreatment, neglected children feel that forming intimate relationships with others loses their control in life and exposes them by increasing their vulnerability.
cf. Cocona's grandma, Cocona's isolation when she needed help with career questionnaire, the fact that she had 12 friends but none to trust.
>Neglected children demonstrate lack of emotional regulation, understanding emotional expressions by others, and difficulty in distinguishing emotions. When posed with problem-solving tasks, neglected children reacted with anger and frustration, and were less enthusiastic with completing a new task. Neglected children often have distressing memories of their past to which they regulate their emotions by suppressing them.
cf. Cocona's frustration about PI jobs, trouble with handling relationship with Papika, emotional outburst without understanding the situtation
Also argubly depression, and anxiety disorders.
>motor, language, and cognitive development significantly lower than non-maltreated children
cf. Cocona being bad at sports, home economics, how she couldn't even make a proper snowman

trauma:
>DSM-IV-TR defines trauma as direct personal experience of an event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury; threat to one's physical integrity, witnessing an event that involves the above experience, learning about unexpected or violent death, serious harm, or threat of death, or injury experienced by a family member or close associate. Memories associated with trauma are implicit, pre-verbal and cannot be recalled, but can be triggered by stimuli from the in vivo environment. The person's response to aversive details of traumatic event involve intense fear, helplessness or horror. In children it is manifested as disorganized or agitative behaviors.
ie shinji seeing his mom dissolve into a machine, asuka being asked to kill herself before she sees her mom hanging, misato's thing at the antarctica

being depressed is not necessarily related with trauma and neither yayaka nor papika (who is not a child) experienced any trauma in-show to argue that it takes a 'traumatized children' setting

Mostly there are people who either

1. wanted the show to stay magical episodic adventure without ramping up in seriousness, despite obvious hints that shit was gonna go done

or 2, thought it was going to get serious but had a certain idea of what it was going to be like and didn't like how it turned out (age gap, etc.)

as i said, all things you assume matter to the show because you externally assume they happened by thinking about logical reality; not things the show actually highlights or focuses on.

this is fiction, anything not inside the fiction is irrelevant despite how relevant it would be in real life

1. trolls
2. concern trolls
3. people who hyped it when it was vague and episodic and were smug that it wasn't like mainstream anime

5. people who only rate anime plot by how completely unlike anything else it is

There's a Japanese box set, it's appropriately expensive though.

Sentai usually puts their basic shows on 3 discs per cours for a basic release and only sells that set, and Flip Flappers is highly unlikely to get a dub.

Too bad that "japan doesn't sexualize lolis anymore" fag got bored back on Ep 2.
>>
>>151203331
I watched YuYuYu before FLFL. It's was an okay show.
The first 2/3 of YuYuYu was fucking boring so I dropped it at ep 5, but picked it up again after seeing a suicide webm here.
The plot twist was ok. The emotional punch is well done making me I cry after ep 11. But the fucking end is worthless piece of shit which ruins all the emotions I got from it.

>>
>>151204088
For me, the ending meant Christmas was saved that year.
>>
>>151204049
I'd say Flip Flappers could only get away with this because it goes under everyone's and their mothers' radars.
>>
>>151203967
It is unnecessary though.
>>
>>151204125
That ending makes everything that happens before inconsequential. It makes all the emotions worthless.
FLFL is now at a perfect position to do a tragic ending that is 3x better than YuYuYu. But I can't really say where it's going.
>>
>>151204223
Half-naked lolis are never unnecessary you mongrel.
>>
>>151204258

>>
>>151204258
Not everyone likes tragic endings, I know I don't, especially if the series is successful at making me attached to the characters.
Also the way Yuuna collapsed during their play gave it just that tingling sense of danger it needed not to end on a completely cheesy note, even if she was "completely fine" right after it.
>>151204223
How is it unnecessary? It's the single most attractive thing I've seen this year.

She is a type of conceptual art named by the Japanese artist Akasegawa Genpei in the 1980s. It refers to a useless relic or character that has been preserved as part of a cast or the cast environment, which has become a piece of art in itself. These objects, although having the appearance of pieces of conceptual art, were not created to be viewed as such. Akasegawa deemed them even more art-like than art itself, and named them "hyperart."

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Thomasson, is in fact, Nyu/Thomasson, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Nyu plus Thomasson. Thomasson is not an art unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Nyu hyperart made useful by the Nyu ass, Nyu thongs and Nyu twintails comprising a full NyuNyu as defined by KKK.

How long does something need to have no purpose yet be maintained for it to gain Thomasson status? this house just outside of my neighborhood has had its construction halted for nearly 2 years. I think there is a difference here.

Stuff like Strike Witches, Keijo and TLR are too straight faced to be considered fanservice.

There's a scene in Urusei Yatsura where the characters completely undress but the camera is handled tastefully so it doesn't feel wrong or out of place.

In Flip Flappers we have the camera swooning in on the underage girls' body parts. We feel the touch of the creators winking at us and indulging themselves. It just doesn't feel right. My friend who regularly watches loli ecchi anime feels weirded out by Flip Flappers.

KyoAni does at have at least well above average character animation, that can't be denied no matter how much your dislike their style or choice of subject material. I mean, we're talking about anime here, where the mere attempt at character animation will already put you above average.

Is it the best? Probably not. Is it worthy of all the praise it gets? Nah. Does it even always actually enhance the show in a meaningful way? Questionable. But the effort's there and that's enough to get them points on a purely technical level.

OK since you seem to defend this article, here is some constructive criticism.
First, the article has far too few technical arguments and little serious analysis. Most of it is subjective and things that are not relevant to the show you're discussing. The article could be made better if you had focused more on materials in the show you want to discuss.
Second, you don't seem to understand the reasons behind the character design in the show. If you could put yourself in the shoe of the director and think about if the show can be improved by adding more elaborate emotions to characters faces, you'll probably reach the same conclusion as the status quo. You mean like Doremi? Here's a little thing for you.

You know what Doremi uses its constant wacky faces for? Comedy.
You know what Flip Flappers isn't? A comedy.
You know what Flip Flappers actually does when it does choose to do a reactionface comedy moment? Pic related.
>>
>>151206411
That isn't fair thought! I cherrypicked my example carefully for my article and if you aren't trying to do a comedy then you need subtle perfection in every piece of character acting to be a relateable piece of animation.
>>
>>151206411
The shading is what makes that image awesome, not the off model faces. This series had a lot of awesome shading, especially in the eyes

It is something that is missing from a lot of series
>>
>>151206325
>There is a huge difference between a joke cut of Mako in Kill la Kill and the scene posted in FLCL.

There is no difference in the wacky face. The FLCL cut just uses said wacky face in an otherwise elaborately animated sequence.
Note that not even sakugabooru's designated autists deem this worthy of the "character acting" tag.

ALso the lack of variation in emotions is pretty much what defines the characters and is strongly related to their backstories. Adding elaborate spectrum of emotions will actually make them out of character.

i don't really care about the article, for example i think >>151206411 is a decent point that could be used to argue against it and it is obviously exaggerated. the fact he made a whole article about something that takes 1 line to say should be enough to see that.

i wasn't the one who posted it. i simply stated >>151205593
>can't really contradict it fully though
and of course the kneejerk response nowadays is to 'accuse' me of 'being an anitwitterfag' as if that somehow meant anything were it to be true.

i can also play that game, you go all around the board from show threads to 3x3 threads acting superior to everyone for 'seeing and reading a lot more anime than them' and thinking your opinions come from some higher place. anything that comes from outside this site gets the same treatment, obviously, with you condescendingly stating how biased they are and how faulty and sheepish their thinking is (a flaw which you would never possibly commit, of course). it's honestly really funny reading your posts because you're the exact type of people you seem to have a personal vendetta against: a dude who parrots opinions of those who are better than him and hasn't produced an ounce of original thinking.

Wacky faces are nice and all, but at the end of the day all those shows fall back on symbolic drawings as a crutch for character animation. That stuff bores me after a while as it brings nothing new to the table and it does not convey the same level of emotion and believability as character animation that does not fall back on symbols.

It has a dedicated following and is selling about as well as to be expected for an original production with no advertisement. I have a feeling that animators from other studios will love it and this will look good on the CV of any 3HZ employee

>>151207071
uh, it really does. that cut is completely derivative of stuff Disney was doing in the 1940s. Just like pretty much all American feature animation ever made since then. It simply has movement instead of having to pack all expression into 3 or 4 frames because these people command budgets 100x larger than any anime ever made and schedules 100x more lenient. There's a whole philosophy about emphasizing the drawing for movement that arose of anime's extremely limited production realities, you can look it up
hint: its most prominent figure's last name starts with K.
>>
>>151207221

>>

thanks, just playing my part here
>>
>>151207221
>that cut is completely derivative of stuff Disney was doing in the 1940s.
Only because Disney set the benchmark for character animation, and even then it's an approach that requires a really good grasp of character acting to pull off rather than just being able to hack your way through a cut with some funny faces.

And yes, I know about Kanada. He's a fucking legend, but his style isn't really suited for acting scenes that require subtlety and nuance. Animators that lean towards realism like Toshiyuki Inoue are generally better character animators.

Mind you, I'm not against cartoony faces but at the end of the day it's not the only "right" way to do character animation and I just don't get why people are so crazy about them when a more realistic and nuanced approach is so much more expressive.
>>
>>151207442

>>
>>151207113
I think they were pretty well addressed by the distinction between "comedy" and not comedy and yeah he specific example in the article may not be the greatest example of facial expressions ever in anime though sure I can admit that.. He also seems to equivocated facial expressions with character animation much too closely as well as if that is all there is too it. There are a bunch of instances where character animation is rather nicely done in the show. Multiple scenes in episode 6, Cocona-Iro running away from the house, Cocona-Iro running from the hospital, Cocona-Iro opening the door to her parents. Papika's running scene in episode 1. Some stuff in later episodes too. It is a fair criticism to say more focus has been placed on action animation than character animation though.

I just don't really follow the whole premise of the argument I think. The idea that for characters to be relatable there needs to be a concentration on either crazy faces or subtle facial expressions just doesn't hold up. If he is going to hold that point then the vast majority of anime must be simply unwatchable.

The way the guy refers to the show having talented staff and animators who more would be expected out of as well like it is being held to a higher standard. I can't help but think that the kinds of talented animators used mostly on this show are not renowned for their character animation.

>>151207221

>I'm not against cartoony faces but at the end of the day it's not the only "right" way to do character animation
>
>
but you are the one trying to say that there is only one 'right' way to do character animation

i'm not gonna pretend every single >.< rehash face is the pinnacle of expression because i really dislike that too when it's derivative, but putting all cartoony limited animation in the same bag is just as disingenuous. accounting for the difference in frames again, I'd take WB over Disney every single time, every single cut. And their approach to expression wasn't exactly realistic and nuanced

The chief animation supervisor for Flip Flappers is actually quite adept at character animation, but most of the good animators on the show are young animators who tend to work on action scenes.
>>
>>151207524
I'm saying there is a "better" way to do character animation. It's okay to fall back on other techniques due to the realities of production and because I just like variety even if not all techniques are equal in my eyes.
>>
>>151207617
Yeah this is kind of exactly the point I was making. The majority of the notable KAs on the show aren't actually all that known for their character animation.

I posted this in a thread days ago, but I'm not sure if anyone paid any attention to it with all the shitposting going on so I got none of those shiny (You)s.

The one thing a lot of people here have been fearing is a Peter-Pan ending where Papika and Cocona are forever separated and it make sense. Papika is the ageless magic dreamgirl that whisks Cocona away to a land of adventure where time stands still and you get cool superpowers, but I have a plausible ending idea that satisfies both a bittersweet ending and one where nothing detrimental happens to out main characters.

Papika and Cocona aren't separated. PI and the real world are "permanently" separated. Mimi seems to be playing the part of Hook, but she also somewhat plays the part of Peter. Keeping Cocona in a magical realm where she doesn't have to worry about anything happening. Papika and Cocona defeat evilMimi and PI and the real world separate. Papika and Cocona can no longer access PI without the shards and Cocona is again separated from her mother, Peter Pan's ending has Peter visiting Wendy every so often with Wendy aging and Peter staying the same, the parallel to this would be Papika and Cocona growing up and leading normal lives with the last shot in the main episode being Cocona going to bed. After the credits it could show Cocona having her dream again, visiting Mimi and PI like at the start of the series. It's a perfectly fine ending where Papika and Cocona can no longer visit PI and have fun, wild adventures, and Cocona is again separated from her mom, but then can see her face again and see Pure Illusion on some nights when she sleeps.

I really hope that a variant of this is what happens. Our girls deserve better than complete separation from each other.

I think the only interaction of you seeing your mother is her merging two universes, going on a rampage against all the people you know and nearly killing your father only to be completely separated again, with no chance of continuing to go on cool adventures with pretty much your only real friend is pretty not-happy. Cocona only being ale to see the good side of her mother in her sleep on random nights is a little sliver of hope after the giant mess that was her entire life.

Yeah that is probably a fair stab at the issue with the article.
