Pic related is the only animu I recall with much fondness, since it got me into programming at a young age. My perception of weeb shit in general is otherwise that it's insufferable.
So, bearing all of that in mind, what am I missing? What is the appeal that I fail to "get"? Can anybody take a crack at explaining it?
There's nothing to get. Either you like it or you don't.
Dismissing a whole medium without a particular reason is pretty retarded though. I don't like heavy metal but that doesn't mean I don't like music.
I have no clue how such a large amount of people can have Lain up on a pedestal of any kind, let alone one as high as so many people have it.

2D girls are hotter than 3D girls. People will try and come up with all sorts of other reasons, but it all comes down to that.

>Can anybody take a crack at explaining it?
Autism. No, really. Your entire post reeks of autism and you like Lain, so you're probably autistic.
Anyways, this isn't your fucking blog space.

Anime is more a genre than it is a medium.

Well, the show successfully achieves a "deep" vibe even if it's actually just a bunch of meandering pseudophilosphical shit. Also, there's something very sympathetic about Lain, a computer geek girl age 13. A lot of guys wanted a gf like that in their teens.

Lain isn't real and neither are you

I rate I comment I subscribe I smash that like button

Thats like saying you dont like watching TV series because you think they are all CSI shit
>>151169103
Nah, you're right to feel that way, OP.
Watch Ergo Proxy or Boogiepop Phantom. You might like them.
youre autistic and lain is probably the only actually good anime youve seen. cause most of it is shit but you like one of the few good series so you probably would like anime fine if you saw shit that fits your taste

It really isn't.

Anime frequently adhere to certain common tropes/cliches/themes/etc. So in that sense, I understand why it could be called a "genre." Same reason people refer to shonen as a genre.
That said, they're not genres.

>Anime is a genre
And then there's this turbofaggot
>>151169103
Lain is shit if you liked it you're probably autistic
>>151169333
>>151171194
I mean, it isn't really a medium, either. It's closer to "genre" than it is to "medium." It's not like it's a different "medium" for your animator to be Japanese

I saw Lain when I was getting into programming after my plan A failed, and I was just discovering classics like "The Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace". All these incredible dreams, already dead. Lain really captured them and brought them alive for me.
Not sure why so many others love it though. My circumstances were pretty odd.
