The Emperor insulted the EU by calling them rabble, but Cornelia and even Schneizel do briefly reference the European front as being a concern in S1. So things weren't really decisively resolved until right before R2, when many of the Knights of the Round had arrived to fight collectively

Akito is a standard mecha side story that only slightly or temporarily feels like Code Geass given the difference in content and focus, so I can understand people not being entirely favorable towards it from that angle. Still, I enjoyed it as a regular robot show.
