The whole driving point of the series and major's character development/exposition is that it doesn't matter. Sort of like anons posting on the internet, the content is what matters, not the crotch accessories of the poster.

Hell, it's right there in the title of the thing. Their brains are digitized, but there's something more there, the "Ghost", and their bodies are just a shell.

Major can swap out a body and change genders like someone else would change clothes. The major sticks to that body type because they like it and they're comfortable in it. In the manga, she's portrayed as particularly promiscuous with other girls, while getting loaded on recreational drugs in her off time because it's fun and feels good, but doesn't advance relationships beyond the physical.

I think one of shirow's dj's or mangas implies it but isn't part of the point of GitS that since technology has advanced to such a point, gender just comes down to preference since you can literally switch bodies and still be the same person?
