As for Ryuuji I think there's also more depth there. For example, his social context of growing up without a father is sort of the reason for him to care so much for Taiga. Also his troubles about his future as a result of caring for his family and such.

However if it was said to minorin and she didn't already have preconceived notions, it would have simply been interpreted as taiga appreciating that she finally found someone that could take care of her, and not as a romantic partner. Well my point is that it's obvious those two have feelings for each other because the show itself sets it up as the obvious conclusion. Once you meet the characters and see the OP, the entire plot basically writes itself in your mind and everything afterwards is confirmation bias and not necessarily based genuinely off of the character actions. A similar real life thing that happens is when couples move in together and suddenly the expectation is for them to get married so they go through with it even though they might be having doubts.

The show even showcases their family issues and has everyone thinking they're a couple before those two even genuinely become friends.

If the point is to show that Taiga has feelings for Ryuuji, the text shows that, and a character even acknowledges it subtly, how can you have any doubts that it's somehow confirmation bias?

If they were real people, you wouldn't know anything about them because you lose the viewer's omniscience you get when reading/watching a story. And the scriptwriting is largely crippled by both people who aren't cut out for it, and the fact that they have to fit into the mouthflaps for the Japanese version. Yes it's part of the writing but the point is that the writing sets it up not directly through character action but outside of the characters themselves through setup of i guess certain expectations developed by imagery, situations, and tropes. So then you see all the classmates shipping them together, them spending what really isn't that unusual amount of time together, or doing actions that perfectly fit other heavily set up devices as evidence of romantic activity. I'm not talking about the novel either which apparently gives way more detail so that there's no doubt at all.

Even given the omnicience afforded by the anime it wouldn't be convincing in real life where you're relatively free from certain genre trappings that influence what you think just by showing something vaguely related (eg they're riding together in a Venetian space gondola, they're in love!)

To be honest though Romance flicks are hard to explain, they have to make a personal connection with the viewer so you can empathize with the characters.
