I think Wind Rises and Kaguya-hime are pretty handily the best of the decade so far. Tatami Galaxy is great though, I think one of the best TV anime. It's almost a given that Yuasa's new work will be as good / will top it; he's been getting better and better as a director, has good (probably) material to work with, and did it all himself at his own studio. Really exciting.

In the early episodes at least, back when I was more into the threads, there was a ton of analysis on some of the more fleeting elements of the show. Like, the rabbit creature is named after a German philosopher, and his ideas could be applied to different parts of the show. So while nothing was ever explicitly stated, one could give in depth readings into the narrative despite apparent simplicity. There's a lot of that in the show. I personally like that approach, but I don't think Flip Flappers did a great job of it.

Really good voice acting. Great OST. Polished visuals and gorgeous background art. It's an interesting watch if you're into historical stuff (I've read Heian and Edo literature so it was right up my alley), traditions and the craft of storytelling. Yes, it's somewhat melodramatic (it's cast are literally actors so what would you expect).

same here. There's a lot of hype around it and I was kind of familiar with the tale from wikipedia and 2hu. I watched it a few nights ago and thought it had boring characters and no direction. The animation was great but it wasn't enough for me to think it was worth watching. The feeling I got was I finished it because I was already an hour in.

I like 'mono no aware' but I felt like in Kaguya it was too extreme and poorly executed. I don't feel like I got significantly more out of it over reading the wikipedia summary in 2 minutes.

After I finished the film I looked it up online and found pretty much unanimous praise. Good to know I'm not alone. I also didn't really get into Millennium Actress or Miss Hokusai, which are probably kind of similar in feel to Kaguya, so maybe it's just not for me.

Same here. I watched the first few episodes but it seemed like it consisted mostly of good visuals and interesting settings/situations. But story telling and character wise it was really falling short for me. I was hoping that maybe there would be a big reveal or something but a few episodes in and it became clear that the show is going to continue the way it was.
