Midori was actually canonly in lesbians with Tamako and got cucked, but people were good sports about it. Reina is clearly in love with Taki and Kumiko has no romantic feelings for anyone yet, and Shuuichi has been in love with her forever, but the idea of Reina and Kumiko not ending up together is so unbelievable to people.

You can blame the KumiRei shippers on tumblr, reddit, and blogposters who pushed this narrative of KyoAni being huge supporters of LGBT rights and Hibike as some kind of watershed moment of representation in anime. I'm fine with either the story as it's meant to go or a full-blown lesbian ending. Kumiko and Reina are cute together. Kumiko and Shoe are cute together. Obviously Reina and Taki will never actually happen and that does make me a bit sad for Reina (in that it's sad to see her so misguided).

But what bothers me is how the anime's dealt with all this. The Kumiko/Reina scenes are so over the top, and in season two Shuichi scenes have been non existent. If they do stick to the novel ending whith Shuichi confessing, it'll feel like it's out of nowhere. If they have an ambiguous ending where no real advances in the relationships are defined it'll be an unsatisfactory ending. If they went full yuri, well frankly that'd be fucking surprising, I'd have to see how well they pull it off before I pass judgement, but think even that won't feel right since the Taki drama has been the penultimate arc. If they were going to shut that thread down, they should have done it sooner.

All in all I feel like there's no way for them to end it well, short of ending it ambiguously and then releasing an anime original Kumiko Love Story movie, which I doubt they'd do. So it's baffling that they've made these decisions. The yuribaiting is fun, sure, and it rakes in the cash until people realise they've been betrayed and cancel their preorders. You've gotta know how to end it satisfactorily. It's like they sabotaged themselves.
