At the time the fansubs ran, the comments on 4chan were highly favorable of the show. As a sign the show was significantly watched by many on 4chan, there were many threads each day. As expected, there were the usual template trolls which appear for most series. These trolls look for an item in each anime series they can easily criticize such as fanservice, violence, or illustration style. Then they seize on it like a bulldog and recite their template complaints over and over and over and over.

After Elfen Lied finished its run, the trolls did their usual thing in making hate threads. Since those who like a show generally avoid hate threads, they don't bother to read and post in those hate threads. It's a mistake to consider the hate threads as a reliable source of info about a show.
