Like I said, I don't remember it very well, but I can try making a few points.
Despite not knowing the novel beforehand I found the story predictable, I waited for some sort of suprising twist or revelation but it didn't come.
I didn't connect with the characters at all. I felt like the MC had a rather superficial relationship with Marnie, she was just fascinated by the weird gaijin rather than developing a genuine friendship or love.
It was too long for what it had to tell, it could have be written to be more fast-paced and concise.

Hosoda was never a true Ghibli animator. His storyboards for his version of Howl had his distinct artstyle instead of the normal Ghibli style. Yonebayashi on the other hand is a tried and true Ghibli animator. I watched everything Ghibli in the space of a week while knocked out cold at home. Kiki I struggled with the most, couldn't finish it in one sit. Spirited Away is the only one I watched twice and it first hit me emotionally. 2nd viewing I could enjoy the artistry and little details more.

The guy who's directing Flip Flappers right now was once a Ghibli animator- you can see his influences but it's clearly it's own work and not riding Miyazaki's dick. Same with the people working at Studio Color, the guy in charge was even and Assistant Director for some of Miyazaki's movies, and everything from their studio is different from Ghibli too.

Ponac and Yonebayashi are just bathing in Miyazaki's shadow. Maybe it's the only way to get this movie funded, but what's the point of leaving the old guys if all you're going to do is copy them again?

Also, you need to create some context with Kiyotaka Oshiyama. He has worked on FMA, Evangelion, Dennou Coil, and tons of other projects. He has a lot of experience with other styles and he didn't start a new studio with flip flappers as the first. He entered an already established studio and probably had enough creative freedom to go with the style he wanted.

Maybe the same reason Miyazaki and Takahata left TMS whilst retaining the established artstyle, creative freedom to pick projects you want, or perhaps nobody say any future in Ghibli anymore but they did like the team, which could explain why so many went allow to the new studio. If it seems like I'm just throwing out idead, it's because I am. Based on the limited info we have and circumstantial evidence, there are no hard claims.

That's some bullshit. He worked as a freelancer on TWO films. Both from this decade (Arriety and Wind Rises).

It's more accurate to say that Oshiyama was part of the BONES circle of animators, but he's been a freelancer for a while. If you had to mention notable projects he worked on you'd first come up with Dennou Coil and FMA Milos, not fucking Ghibli. It's a completely different case from someone like Katsuya Kondo or Yonebayashi.
