Why do I always get the feels after watching a romance anime?
>>
>>150967528
It activates your almonds.
No but seriously, memories and emotions are very strongly linked in your brain, so feeling an emotion brings up memories of you feeling that emotion, which brings up more of that emotion.
>>

Well it certainly brings me into a depressive spiral knowing that I'm not even the main character of my story, just some background insert for someone else and that magic-like romance is not real, at least not for me.

So Taki was inexplicably obsessed with the meteor disaster and felt like he had to search for someone, immediately after it happened ("ever since that day when the stars fell") even though bodyswap shenanigans wouldn't happen until three years later, because of musubi magic?

Why did it take him so long to recognize the location then, it's not like there are all that many places built inside existing meteor craters, and he said that he was pretty drawn to the incident at the time.
>>
>>150993681
Possibly. He met Mitsuha before the meteor, technically. He wouldn't have known it at tat time, but from the day he got that red string, he was tied to her by fate.

>>150993681
Because there's like timelines; the timeline where he had a hard time finding the place was from the timeline where he wasn't inexplicably obsessed with the meteor disaster and didn't really care. Note that everyone else immediately knew about the disaster, but he didn't; that's because he treated the comet as nothing more than a beautiful view.

Then, three years later, shenanigans happen, and a new timeline is created where he's obsessed with the disaster because of forgetting Mitsuha.

In the first timeline, there wasn't a Mitsuha for him to forget, so he wasn't drawn to the incident.

>>
>>150994388
>a new timeline is created where he's obsessed with the disaster because of forgetting Mitsuha.
The act of forgetting Mitsuha reached back in time to retroactively make him obsessed with it even before he knew her? Mitsubishi magic again?

>In the first timeline, there wasn't a Mitsuha for him to forget
But even in the first timeline, she didn't get blown up until after about a month of body swapping, and he remembered her perfectly well for weeks after the swapping stopped, enough time to track down Itomori and trek over to the god shrine, in spite of the diary entries erasing themselves for no reason. So even in the failure timeline, there was a connection between the two.

(Then he forgot her immediately after successfully passing on what she needed to know? I mean I know the point is that dreams are hard to remember, but there is a point where it gets a little contrived)
>>
>>150995005
Yep. Braided cord metaphor; everything is tangled. There is a missing gap of three years that we never see in either timeline; one in which he wasn't obsessed, and the second where he was obsessed.

In the second timeline, after he's helped save Mitsuha, he pretty much immediately forgets her, unlike how it happened the first time.

And sure it is contrived; the diary entries wait for him to check them until they get deleted.

You can take it as a demonstration of how the harder you try to remember something, the faster it fades away. Or its contrived. Whatever the case, it does work as pathos.

Also keep in mind the two timelines aren't really parallel to each other; the first timeline leads into the second timeline. Its the connection between the two from the failure timeline that leads into the connection between them in the succesful timeline. I guess you'd call that weaving, right?
>>
>>150994388
>In the first timeline, there wasn't a Mitsuha for him to forget, so he wasn't drawn to the incident.
He got the braid from her the first time through. He was wearing it at the start of the movie because he got it from her.

If the movie was told solely from Taki's perspective and going the first time through. Mitsuha would have been having swaps with his future self, all while he is completely unaware. He'd have gotten the braid from a girl he didn't know and red string musubi magic would have brought him into the fold, 3 years later, when he turned 18. Then they rewrite history.

I guess you could assume the future Taki you don't see never took his dreams that seriously. Or, time was just so complete and utterly fucked during that period that there was no past, present or future. It was wearved together like the threads in their braids.

>>150995206
>And sure it is contrived; the diary entries wait for him to check them until they get deleted.
This is still dumb as fuck. I can suspend disbelief for it just fine, but it's still dumb.
>>
>>150995565
Yeah, when I said there wasn't a mitsuha to forget, I mean a mitsuha with meaning. Whether she died or not, there was a Mitsuha who went to Tokyo and gave him the braid. But at that point it was just a random chick to him. But when he forgets her the second time, the feeling of loss goes back in time and messes him up.

I think it just comes down to that line he said about thinking of the comet as just a beautiful view; I imagine that to be his feeling the first time around, and then later he gets melancholy from it.

But yeah, time is very jumbled.

The diaries deleting themselves is contrived, but it works for dramatic purpose.

After reading the novel, I think in the new timeline the swapping still really happened but everyone got memory wiped later because of past changing. During last date with Okudera senpai (before ending), Taki have to treated her a meal because he promised her that he will treat her after his graduation, which is originally Mitsuha doing when they swapped.
The other point is that Taki also said that even the memory is hazy, ha remember that time as a very fun time, like everything in Tokyo is new for him. This is also the lingered feeling of Mitsuha when she was in his body.

Since the bodyswapping shenanigans preceded the comet strike, the only thing that would really be affected by its prevention would have been the day trip they took to Itomori, right? None of what Mitsuha got up to while being Taki would have changed.

>After reading the novel, I think in the new timeline the swapping still really happened but everyone got memory wiped later because of past changing.
Well, yeah. Bodyswapping happened before the comet. The timeline only changed after the day of the meteor strike and even then, a lot of the physical things characters did, did not change. Taki still went to Itomori with Okudera and Tsukasa, for example. Likewise, he (Mitsuha) probably still did things like sew up Okudera's skirt. But as time goes on, you tend to forget the exact details and people could easily play Taki's off-days as just being a teenager (same goes for Mitsuha)

The only real changes are the logic and reasons behind people doing things. Or how they explain it to others.

I like how time changes were dealt with in this film. They didn't cause drastic changes all of a sudden like you see in other movies that deal with time travel and the world changing massively. It felt somewhat natural in that people didn't even second guess why they did things after the change. It's like if we were in an 'alternate' timeline now because someone's grandma died a day later than she should have. We'd never know any better.

>>150996911
>But as time goes on, you tend to forget the exact details and people could easily play Taki's off-days as just being a teenager (same goes for Mitsuha)
Also, as a real world example. I remember going on a day trip with a friend, to a city a couple of hundred miles away from where I lived at the time, about 12 years ago, when I was 14/15. If you asked me why we took that day trip or what we did, I couldn't tell you. I know we were there all day and had been planning it for a few weeks before hand.

Something like that was totally out of character for me. More so in context with the type of person I am now, so it seems even more far removed. There was definitely not time travel, body swapping hijinks involved. I can say that at the very least.

By the time we get to the end of the story, real life as gripped Taki, Mitsuha and everyone else probably don't remember too many details of the time, other than what they were doing in the hour or so before.

Similarly if you asked me about a day of disaster like 9/11. I remember getting home from school, my sister telling me to come to her room to see what was on TV and the feeling of disbelief. If you asked me about anything in the hour or two before I got home, I couldn't tell you anything other than that I was at school. Ask me about other notable days like the tsunami back in 2011, and I couldn't tell you a single detail other than watching generic news footage that was on repeat for weeks afterwards.
>>
>>150997283
Yeah, I also think the diaster scene would strike Nipponese people harder than anyone since they experienced Tohoku earthquake five years ago.
>>
>>150997395
I also meant to apply that in context of the movie.

By the end, characters will remember details about the day, but most of it will become fuzzy. In the moments just before the meteor impact, their memories would probably be extremely vivid for the rest of their lives.

But memories of the rest of the day would end up becoming weaker over time. People like Tessie and Sayaka should remember stuff like Mitsuha pushing everybody to evacuate the town. Although I guess they wouldn't question how/why she knew, and that's the point where I just suspend my disbelief.

I can totally understand why they wouldn't remember some things by the time Taki and Mitsuha meet up again. More so as you end up working and spend more time focused on going through the motions with work. Then apply movie logic and suspension of disbelief, and it's enough for me.

You should go for the experience. It looks beautiful on a big screen. If you appreciate anime as a medium, anyway. It's worth it for that alone.

If you don't care for animation and attention to detail. I'd still watch it because it's a sweet story.

I can watch a movie twice, I re watch things often. I'll download it and give it a proper watch tonight then. Hopefully the audio is also fantastic, I'm a huge sucker for audio.

I'd advise watching it in a cinema if you can. If you can't, wait for the BD/BD rips to come out and watch it on a big screen at home. If you can't wait, then watch the DVD screener that's on nyaa, but take it for what it's worth.

majority of voters don't give a shit about the Animated category, so they either abstain or ask their kids.

>I saw all five. I like to sit down with [the young people in her family] and watch them. We all loved Big Hero 6 and there was no discussion, no argument, no nothing. The kids watched that one three times — what does that tell you?

>I loved Big Hero 6. Then I saw The Boxtrolls and I thought the animation was great — but the movie didn’t knock me out. I must admit that I have not seen How to Train Your Dragon 2. But I have seen Song of the Sea and The Tale of Princess Kaguya, both of which I loved very much — they were really unique. If I was just voting for animation, I’d have gone with Boxtrolls. But since you have to consider everything, I went with Big Hero 6.

>Where’s our Finding Nemo this year? It’s not a very great group. I liked Song [of the Sea] and The Tale [of the Princess Kaguya], but I’m voting for [How to Train Your] Dragon [2] because it was superbly entertaining and works on most levels, although its story could be a little better.

>I only watch the ones that my kid wants to see, so I didn’t see [The] Boxtrolls but I saw Big Hero 6 and I saw [How to Train Your] Dragon [2]. The cinema is dark, and whoever rando person is sitting next to you will never see you again since you live 2 hours away. And they're probably trying to watch the movie too rather than get distracted by passing judgment on their neighbour as long as they aren't being disruptive.

For me the best way to get over social anxiety is to realise that not everything is about me, and not everyone is out to get me. Can you remember the face of the last person you saw being emotional in public?

There should still have already been a connection in the second timeline though, since the second timeline only begins at the Dawn of the Final Day, with Taki entering Mitsuha and Mitsuha being kicked over to Taki at the shrine in the future.

Since Taki swapped with Mitsuha on the morning of the final day thanks to drinking his waifu's spit, that should mean the Mitsuha in Taki's body at the shrine in the future comes from that point in time as well, right?

So how does she remember getting hit by a comet, when from her perspective that shouldn't have happened yet?

If the Mitsuha in Taki's body at the shrine is from failure timeline post-disaster, who then reentered her own body and therefore the success timeline, what happened to the Mitsuha of the success timeline that Taki displaced to jack her body on the morning of the final day? Where did she go?

Oh shit I'm having Doctor Who flashbacks
>>
>>151004213
Its Mitsuha all the way down.

Maybe there never was a Mitsuha from the success timeline from before Taki came in; since that'd be the failure timeline. The failure timeline Mitsuha becomes the success timeline when Taki swaps in.

What if Taki in Mitsuha's body took a trip to Tokyo and found his younger self, and then caused a time paradox?

When did Mitsuha go to Tokyo? The same day Taki went on a date with Miki? Because when he was able to revert the damage back prior to the meteor falling, Mitsuha's hair was already cut before even waking up. Which means she cut her hair the day before. I don't get this part.

Nothing beyond some obnoxious laughter in my first viewing.

Even more obnocious, overexaggerated, laughter in my second one with some weeb shouting stuff like sugoi out loud.

I dunno about you guys, but this shit really hit me hard.
>>
>>151010272
Stunned silence mostly, but then laughter (slightly inappropriately) when Taki is crying and cupping her boobs, but its understandable giving the previous scene.
>>
>>151010583
That was a foul right there by Shinkai. You don't fucking do that. Wringing people's already tensed up emotions.

But I want to fucking know why Taki just didn't fucking write his name there holy shit.
>>
>>151010602
That actually was pretty funny really. Now that you mention, it all those previous cuppings where a setup for that final cupping.
>>
>>151010637
Reading the lyrics of the insert song didn't really help too. Fuck, I'm tearing up again.
>>
>>151010272
I had some autist who was bragging about it being his 3rd viewing singing along to the music.
he also took off his shoes and put his feet on the seat which I didn't mind too much since they were recliners but his feet fucking stank
>>
Are we all in agreement that Yumetourou is the best song?

Insert song? I'd go for Nandemonaiya personally. Because it was during the part where finally Shinkai broke free of what he usually does.

Yumetourou was good though.

My favorite is Kataware-doki, even though it isn't an insert song.

wow her voice is so clean
>>
>>151011242

She IS 18. That's why Mitsuha sounds so young I guess.
>>
>>151011096
Where the fuck can I listen to a non piano cover of it though.
>>
>>151010193
Mitsuha wes actually about to write the same thing , unless she wanted to write her name in Kanji.
>>

Mitsuha is supposed to be young. She _is_ 18
>>
The voiceover is fun too.

I'm just glad Tessie and Sayaka are getting married.
>>
>>151011837
Tessie danced on Sayaka's palm since the start. She just waited for him to give up on Mitsuha.
>>
>mitsuha's note on taki's phone turned into ascii bugaloo

It was the best Shinkai film, but Spirited Away still takes the cake on GOAT anime film.
>>
>>151011737
Cute!

>>151011374
I wish they did this more. Characters that are cast in age appropriate roles naturally speak in a more fitting manner and dialogue sounds so much better. Like when they cast an actual child to play the role of a loli character rather than a 40-year-old trying to put on some cutesy voice.
>>
>>151012045
The pro-voice actors in this film actually said that they have to act more natural for this film. Which is a good thing imo.
>>
>>151012118
Actually in anime movies like Hosoda's and Shinkai's, you'll notice that the voice acting is more natural than the usual "animated" type of voicing. Which in my opinion I like more.
>>
The best insert song was Sparkle. Fight me.
>>
>>151012118
I'm glad. It really helps with immersion and character believeability. I'm really not a fan of some over-exaggerated, cutesy voices. While it may not be an entirely fair comparison, since the quality of VAs does differ, but I put it in almost the same regard as how dub VAs only ever use 4-5 different generic accents, depending on the character type. It's really bland.
>>
>>151012319

IIRC in the novel one of the rules that Mitsuha set for Taki was "Don't get too close to Tessie, he belongs to Sayaka"
>>
>>151012319

Nandemonaiya > Yumetorou = Sparkle

Katawaredoki
>>
>>151012453

>>
>>151012118
I didn't realize until I actually started learning Japanese how Japanese "acting" line delivery is even further removed from "normal" speech than English acting is from how people actually talk.
>>
>>151012453
Yes, she friendzoned him since the start. But you can see some subtle hints in the movie that Tessie one sidedly liked Mitsuha.
>>
BD when? I want to rewatch sometime soon, maybe in a month or so.
>>
>>151012657
Usually no less than six months after premiere.
>>
>>151012782
If we go by the Japanese theatrical release, then that should be March.

End of Jan if you consider the premiere that happened in July in LA, but I think that's less likely.

Yeah, probably around Feb or March.

I don't remember the exact details from the movie, but I recall the first time around, her friends were shocked in the evening, when the meteor was about to hit. The second time around, when Taki was in her body, he went to school and they were shocked, and it was the morning. So I think the timeline still works, but I'd have to rewatch it to confirm
