Chaldea is an organization similar to Atlas or any of the major ones. Their particular thing is that they combine magic and science together in order to ensure the longevity of human life. Their crowning achievement is basically time travel using singularities.

The officers of Chaldea will go throughout time and make sure that time doesn't go off track at any point, while ensuring humanity stays alive.

Except on the first day on the job the institute gets bombed and most people die. Marie, Mashu, and you the MC get thrown back into the past with Chaldea technology. The only other one that survived is Dr.Roman, a mysterious man whom Serlock Holmes can't figure out yet.

Mashu combines with a servant and becomes your sidekick, you become the last master who must save all of time, and it turns out Marie died in the original explosion and the only thing that came back to the past with you was her soul. When she tried to go back to the present she evaporated into nothing since there wasn't a body to go back to.

There are plenty of things that are poorly written in FGO.

Counter Guardians holding down the Primate Murder apparently are "grand servants" now. Which is somehow different from "True Servants" of Fate/Strange Fake or the idea of heroic spirits appearing as heroic spirits int he time of their homelands needs, because who needs logic.

A human being should not be able to fully house a servant. Vessels are empty constructs created via grail for a reason. The whole vessel thing is inconsistent too - Waver apparently can house one of greatest strategists inside him without loosing an ounce of his personality or identity(oh and he somehow ages backwards with ascensions), yet Rin somehow is 100% Ishtar.

Grail summoning gods makes no sense, but then again, grail summoning an "alternate" Artoria who lived completely different life(Artoria Lancer) makes zero sense too. The fact that F/E servants remember their grail wars or overall servants remember previous summonings also is nonsense.

FGO overall exists on the principle of retconing bunch of shit to exist. Even the main premise of "repairing the timeline" makes zero sense since Nasuverse is within many worlds theory and thus timelines are fluid and branch off and any choice. There being a "danger" to timeline makes zero sense.

Retconing Counter Guardians as "Grand Servants" is stupid but it is least of the material's problems.

The prologue of FGO already encompasses a lot of problems when you see magi in white coats use scientific mumbo jumbo(despite science being the opposite of magecraft) with it all culminating when your heroic heroine Mashu ends up defending from a full powered excalibur by shielding you with(and I am not making it up) a spaceship table that is powered by willpower.

Even the idea of "backwater" Holy Grail ritual is messed with now with Solomon, the big moustache twirling villain of FGO apparantly having had a hand in it somehow via manipulating Zouken and shit.
