I think it's the same "technology" as what I posted. If you look at the base in the video there is a thin line where the clear plastic meets the black plastic. The problem with my holobox is that I used 1/8" plexi which created a double reflection. The Gatebox probably just uses a very thin piece of plastic along with a projector in the top of the cylinder to get a clearer image.

The creator himself want Hatsune Miku for his own private use, and he is fully intending to try to cater to needs and wants of different tastes. Licensed characters including anime and videogames are on the cards, but it really depends on how big this market is and if they could afford it.

What had been missing until recently is the voice recognition and facial expression recognition. It was very hard to be connected with a screen avatar if it can't actually see you.

I just want to emphasise that Gatebox, in its current most recent model, is capable of detecting you waving your hand at her, and she would wave back at you.

This was not in the first prototype, which was entirely voice activated and basically like the Kinect or what ever voice recognition software out there. The developer was unhappy with it because Gatebox 1.0 couldn't respond to the physical presence of the user.

So he went and added cameras that allow Gatebox to know the user has approached it, can tell if you are smiling and smiles back, and would not randomly do shit just from hearing commands from the TV (a known issue with Kinect).

Basically she would only follow your orders if you physically approach her, and notice that you are giving her a command. She would, for example, welcome you home when you physically in her camera range.

The creator was very adamant that these features are important, because that's what he personally wanted for his own Gatebox at home.

What you don't get is that AI is only good in concept, like flying cars or the food pill. What people want when they demand AI companions, is that they want a robot that can "truly" love them. But the paradox is that love cannot be real unless it is voluntary. If you want a fake relationship, then you don't need an AI. You just need a machine that can pretend it has free will. To demand an AI for a task that doesn't need it is stupid. It would be like deliberately over-engineer a toaster.

Adding AI only has one purpose; to give the machine the ability to disobey.

And the only reason the user is demanding true AI is because the user think that is the only key for a real relationship.

The developer also studies Project Diva animations to get inspiation for how his waifu would move in the Gearbox.

The voice actress was chosen from 10 candidates, mostly for her clarity of voice. She models all the motions herself and then the 3D department converts it into the character manually.

The developer was very moved when their video release at the start of the year got a huge response. Specifically they realised Japan wasn't the only nation with lonely people. That was why an English version is being made.

They produced their first prototype in Oct of last year. That was what was used in the first trailer and their demonstrations. But the developer said she was only 30% complete. She was responding to sounds only, and it was not emotionally connecting to his satisfaction.

That is why with the latest prototype, he added face recognition. Smile at her and she will smile back. Wave at her and she would wave back.

Part of that is to decrease her errors, so she wouldn't accidentally turn off your TV and such. By making sure she takes non-verbal communication into account, she can more accurately know what the owner wants.

In the end the developer himself finally gave the Okay to start production and commercialisation, when he felt she is now advanced enough for him to want to take her home and live with her.

In particular, he felt that she is truly ready, when he would rather hang out with her at home than to go to work.

Future plans:
More characters, male characters, videogame characters.
Multiple Gearboxes that you place in every room and are linked up, so she wouldn't be restricted to one place. There are also plans for having more than one girl at the same time.

And long term is a wish that gearbox would h..ave physical mobility. But that's far away.
