As another anon said, demons live in the Red Moon of Ente Isla. Before Maou united the demons, it was in constant war and so demons lived in fear of other demons, and this fear gave them their magical energy. When Maou became Demon King, basically it got stopped and he realised without fear the demons would lose their magic. So instead of ruining his kingdom he waged war on the humans, instilling the fear that they would become extinct when he wanted nothing like that. Plus, this was the demons' first contact with humans and they didn't understand they have greater civilization than them, hence most saw men as a resource and treated them as such.
