Sounds like you weren't around when Free! was in it's prime. Kyoani doing a cute boys with muscle fanservice instead of cute girls SoL was a huge deal. It really set off the wave of otaku fanboys who felt betrayed. And it was one of the most popular anime directed at a female audience that wasn't shoujo.

I don't think so. KyoAni seems to work on seniority. Every director that gets his debut is older in KyoAni(Kyoto) than anyone else. Except for Yamada and that's why Noriko left. She was the next in the ladder and Yamada comes and makes a smash hit in Keion. As for Utsumi the AniDo studio is and will always be a support studio. So going up in ranks there is meaningless so she left because she wasn't invited to work in the Uji office despite Yamamura being invited. All of this are japanitwitter so take it with a grain of salt.

There was no shock factor. But KyoAni is trying hard to replicate, no doubt about it. Similar character designs and similar story.
But the main selling point for Free were half naked sexy teenage boys. So if this wants a chance at all, it needs an anime with kyudogi wearing sexy teenage boys.
