It's just boring. Nothing much really happens each episode. The characters aren't that interesting. Strike Witches wasn't brilliant or complex, but it was fun. Watching it was enjoyable. Things were always happening.

Brave Witches nothing happens. Entire episodes about "It's really cold!" or "I like food!". It tries to be slice of life, but only halfway, because it also wants to be flying magical girls. The cameos feel forced, REALLY forced, but ironically the cameos are more enjoyable than anything else. (Just SEEING Eila is more fun than 99% of Hikari's screen time, which by the way, she gets more of than anyone, more than Yoshika got in SW so far)

I think the issue is that the ensemble isn't quite as even.

It's always "Witch of the week + the Hikari/Nao/Nipa trio"

Rall basically says one thing a week. Georgette and Sadako live in the background. Rossman is the one that trains.

Krupi's episode I really liked simply because she really got into the role with the whole "veteran pilot trying to season the newbies" plot thing, and she still got some lechery in on top of that.

You don't really get a feel for their dynamics beyond their base jobs.

In the original Strike Witches series, the 501st were almost always interacting with each other in all kinds of combinations, even if they did trend towards usual duos.

I love the Witches series, and am loving the hell out of Brave Witches. I think if it goes on to be the same length it might match Strike Witches because the cast is just as good.

Honestly i feel like it's just the fact that none of the witches are enjoyable to watch other than Nipa, i mean i actually liked all the strike witches it's probably Because they had a character.

Genuinely disappointed with this season. Absolute shite character building besides the Krupi episode and the CG takes away one of the best parts of the original series. Heck, even the lack of fanservice kills it because they didn't fill that void with anything. Whole show just feels hollow. Hope it's done enough to warrant a season 2 AND some changes.

All of their archetypes became renowned aces and this correlates to the show. Chuck might've had low kill count but that was because of the U.S rotation system, and yet he did ace in a day achievement.
Lucchini is a child prodigy ace, best in the world no doubt of her age group, followed by Helma.
501st boasts vast array of powerful abilities for their witches, Eila's is pretty much one of the most overpowered skills to have. Sanya is amazing with her radar system and handling the fliegerhammer and so on.
Eila's kill count is the highest for non Karlsland witch and she's the diamond ace of Suomus.
So yeah, they're all super aces all right in their unit.

After having rewatched SW1 and 2 i was just thinking the same thing, if you could see into the future any further it'd be even more overpowered.

See as a dirty animeonly fag you never get told that and you barely see her do anything other than cause trouble around the base and i love her for it.
You barely see her go out on patrol or anything and when she does she is basically a background character most of the time, so the anime really doesn't convey that feeling that she is a child prodigy.

that reminds me, CWO Juutilainen pulled this off once (6 kills that day), the second-scoring ace Captain Wind is credited with doing it five times (he was considered the best fighter pilot in FiAF, but he was reassigned as an instructor at one point & partially because of this Juutilainen got ahead of him, Juutilainen was said to have refused commission many times due to his fear of ending up flying a desk, maybe his fear was warranted...)

Don't get me wrong, Lucchini exactly does that thing we see her doing, being troublemaker around anywhere she goes. But in combat she's never a liability and her ability is pretty damn strong for taking down neurois. For her age that is amazing how she keeps up with her seniors in combat like that. You just have to think about the off-screen stuff that's going on when anime doesn't convey it directly.
Lynne was excellent marksman to begin with, she was just stressed out and not confident in herself. Miyafuji helped her to overcome that, that's anime stuff yes.

Hikari was a mistake.

The 502nd already had a functional dynamic going for them for years. But they just had to shoe in a Brand New Fuso Witch OC Donut Steel. The forcing in of her and her sister to the 502nd threw the group dynamics for a loop and cut into the screentime that should've gone to the core 502nd.

I mean, hate on Yoshika all you want, but at keast she was made to be part of the 501st from it's inception. And the other girls of the 501st were also made with Yoshika in mind.

Point is, the 501st was made with that crew of eleven girls in mind. And thus, the framework and dynamics of the group worked well. Meanwhile, the 502nd was made with that crew of eight girls in mind. And they worked quite well too. The Karabuchi sisters were really an unncessary addition that only ruined the mixture of the 502nd baking batter.

If you think about it, if Humikane really did want to add a new member to the 502nd, then he would've done so years ago. The eight pilot ensemble of the 502nd has been stable for literally half decade. The World Witches series logo had the goddamn 502nd girls' silhouettes on it for fucks sake and it had them for years. That's a pretty clear indicator that they're already a complete package.

I keep hearing people spout this drivel. The 502nd are never in any real danger and because of their whole 'Magic makes them more durable even without shields up' They only really get hurt if the plot demands it. Plus the whole 'supplies' are short sub plot never really was felt outside of food because they still had enough weaponry and were able to maintain the striker units. If people want a truly serious World of Witches story, you'd see witches actually being killed off, maimed, or them put into extreme strains.

But I doubt you're going to see them pull off a Saving Private Ryan or Hacksaw Ridge anytime soon.

Would work fairly well too. Since the 508th is one of the more elusive JFWs and we don't really know much about the Witches in the Squad nor how their group dynamics work. And addition to the crew wouldn't hurt the group dynamics since we barely know jack shit about the group in the first place.

Quite a bit of undesigned Witches too so if Humikane had his illustrator boner on, he could've easily chucked out designs for the undesgined Witches.

And on the more pragmatic side of things, the 508th is stationed at sea, so the anime staff wouldn't have much difficulties since they're just rendering ship hulls and open seas 90% of the time.

Unfortunately, rather than a 502nd anime, we instead got the Hikaru Show, featuring occasional lines from some of the 502nd girls.

The end result is that fans of the 502nd who want to see the 502nd girls feel cheater as they instead get a fistful of Hikari shoved in their face. And those who want to like Hikari and see her grow on her own merits become unable to do so on the grounds that she's stuck in a setting that she really shouldn't be in.

So ultimately, nobody is happy.

The real problem is the writing as a whole. Miyafu was able to exist along side a larger cast that still allowed them to be fleshed out in Strike Witches. The writers of Brave Witches are just awful at everything so while Hikari would be a good character for the group. Watching Brave Witches makes me feel very much the same way I felt watching Macross Delta, there is a deep gaping hole in it that needs filled (and I'm not talking about Krupinsky's). Like, I just don't care about the characters (Nipa and Krupi aside) and while they've shown they can do some nice dynamic bits to really stand out on it's own such as the Artillery/Spotter Neuroi they just keep going back to bigass airships over the sea.

Jesus Christ this episode. That forced drama between Hikari and Takami was unnecessary as hell. Also fuck you Manstein for playing the pronoun game for so long. The episode really hadn't Rall at all in it, same screen time as usually. Only the talk with Takami counts as something more special and that was really short segment still.
The highlight of this episode is pretty much hearing Rall sing in the ED with her sweet voice.

I was giving it some thought today. Every character in the 501st had an internal conflict, a reason to fight. I think that's what gave it heart, and i think that's why we fall for all those characters. 502nd has none of that. I actually like Hikari, because she has a reason to fight and something to prove, but the rest of the cast feels bland. I mean, I like them, I guess, but they haven't grown at all. I can forgive bad CG, cheesy comedy, and panty shots. But lazy writing really breaks my suspension of disbelief. Just my 2 cents.

Sanya wants war to end so she can find her parents. Eila tagged along and does everything for Sanya to help her in her mission given they're a couple.
Shirley was more free spirited, Lucchini really showed that she cares for Romagnia and especially that island in OVA2, but that's writing from later installments and not S1.
Perrine was doing her everything to free Gallia, which eventually happened and then reconstruct it back to former glory. Lynne just tags around her.

Stop overthinking this, the history timeline and witch world uses years as is for the simplicity of it like we do now. Religions nor further history isn't the focus nor are we ever getting in depth about it. Save for that Sengoku Witch manga.
Oh yeah, Nobunaga survived and unified Japan in witch world, then Fuso embarked on the west coast of Liberion and made a city there. Talk about Fuso being a literal superpower.
