Salt's motive still isn't clear. The preview at the end of 10 showed him confronting Mimi, and it doesn't seem like his goal ends at getting his waifu back. Both Salt and Saltdad used the language if "liberating" PI so their goals honestly sound fairly close. Whatever distinction will only be revealed once we have more information. I like it with both, it makes it feel like more of a journey, if for example Papika and Cocona had just met then stuff got really serious it wouldn't make much sense for them to be as invested in each other as they are now but we have seen them have relatively low stakes adventures and bonding together building up this relationship. The current kind of episodes would lack impact without the previous stuff. Although I really wouldn't mind if Flip Flappers was 26 or 52 episodes with multiple arcs and lots of fun PI adventures, although sustaining a mystery element for that long is much harder to do without becoming frustrating.

I feel like 2 cours of PI adventures would have started to suffer from the same issues as Tsubasa chronicles, where the episodic adventures begin to feel played out and the underground plot both loses all of the sense of anticipation and becomes much too big for its britches.

This double-narrative structure works much better for short series. If Flip Flappers was going to be longer, I'd prefer if it was two seasons with two different narratives rather than one continuous 2 cours arc.

They might have had to break it down into like one mystery leading into another. So maybe end the first cour with a string of serious episodes leading up to the unravelling of the KKK and its secrets and then having a lull in the seriousness for a while at the beginning of cour 2 with more PI adventures as they collect the final fragments before building up to all the shards being collected and everything going to shit with the whole Mimi thing getting resolved before at the end and a final big battle for control over PI with the KKK.

You could make it work if it was heavy or grimderp right from the start. Basically making it so that Cocona/Papika are the only islands of peace and affection in each other's lives while everything else is going to shit.

That sets the stage for later episodes where mortal danger to one character gains emotional impact because you know their death would destroy the other as well. Or arcs where they have to toughen up and survive without each other's support for a period, but they still choose to be together after re-uniting even though they are no longer co-dependant.

Obviously it would be a very different story to flipflappers, but I think it would be pretty nice if executed well.

I think in the way Flip Flappers currently is to me though, if the story remained essentially the same, it seems like for the "bad times" to feel particularly bad there needs to be a strong portrayal of the "good times". They took great care to build the Papika and Cocona relationship and spent about half the series doing just that.
