Great movie, back in the day you could even exchange shekels for cels.

I would say Totoro or Only Yesterday, depending on your criteria.

Ghibli sucks dick

Your taste is defective
>>150907446
Can't wait for that mother fucker to die and see all Ghibli kids on their knees.
>>150907425
Although I admit that Ghibli is overrated, is nowhere near bad.

right shots are all superior
>>150907545
pleb shit
>>150906723
You cant post EoE that's cheating
>>150907529
The studio which houses the two greatest anime directors is overrated?
>>150907782
Some Ghibli films are extremely overrated, Spirited away being the best example, that film is pretty simple, it explores simple themes and it doesn't do anything that special compared to other movies out there and yet it's regarded as a masterpiece and one of the best anime movies of all time. It's not even the best film of its own year.
>>150907006
Good pick, it's disgracefully underrated for a Ghibli film.
>>150907938
I'm afraid I can't take you very seriously with a post like that. Are you like, into film at all? Or just an anime guy?
>>150908041
Just like Kiki. People generally like to give praise to Spirited away and Mononoke but those were some of their least stimulating ones to me. I prefer the simpler, more slice of life Ghibli films, like Kiki, Whisper of the Heart or Totoro.
I feel like Miyazaki is at its best with movies like that, since his strongest points are portraying human emotion/psychology in a believable way and displaying life lessons in subtle ways.
>>150908194
Not him but why don't you tell me what makes you think highly of Spirited away?
All posts were wrong until mine.
Pure Sadamoto kino coming through.
>>150908305
I'm not really interested in writing a review. If you want to hear positive words about the movie, Google is a few clicks away. People far more eloquent and credible than I could sell it to you better.
>>150908375
I actually really didn't like this one, watched it for the first time a couple days ago. The climax of the movie with the rocket launch was great, but overall the structure of the film struck me as kinda off and I wasn't enjoying any of the characters. Perhaps too ambitious? The amount of "stuff" the movie touches on is incredible, I'll give it that much. The setting was cool too.
>>150908375
All posts that include that word should be bannable offenses.
>>150908244
but grand adventures tend to be what the average person wants to be entertained by, not more of the same semi-regular daily life.
Heres a true classic
>>150907005
That's a stretch. Go watch Angel's Egg if you want to complain about an anime ripping off Tarkovsky.
>>150908864
Angels egg is still good tho
>>150908919
Yeah, so is EoE.
>>150908726
Why is that?
>>150908957
Shit meme propagated by /tv/ crossboarders.
>>150908771
Miyazaki, Takahata and Kondo are/were great at spinning the mundane into far grander and more romantic stories. Although there's certainly a distinction to be made between those and Miyazaki's more operatic films, I think the average person would get a kick out of anything from these directors.
I can't get into Ghibli films. As revered as they are, I just can't seem to enjoy them. It feels as though they're strictly for children. I'm going to watch Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, and Princess Mononoke, but my expectations aren't very high.
>>150909021
Get a load of this gourmand
>>150909021
>>150907938
I like Spirited Away but I cant challenge this
>>150909039
Which have you seen? The good Ghiblies are Miyazaki + Takahata + Whisper of the Heart. Everything else has its fans, sure, but if you go through those and still can't find something to love I'd be seriously surprised.
>>150909039
Watch Grave of the Fireflies. Alternatively, watch Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises, since those are considered to be Miyazaki's more "mature" films.

>Anything but Naussicaa
>best Ghibli
>>150908375
excellent taste
>>150908375
This is one of the best anime films and possibly one of the best films in general ever made. Even fucking Roger Ebert loved it.
It's a shame it's so obscure. I'm actually hoping the sequel never comes out, even if it's only a spiritual successor. It would taint the name just by being related because there's no way they could top the original.
>>150909039
Watch Nausicaa and Laputa. Nausicaa lures you in with a fantastical setting but is definitely NOT for kids and has layers of darker themes. Laputa is a bit lighter hearted and might change your mind about some of the more "childish" Ghibli films.
>>150908771
That's exactly what differentiates Ghibli films from mainstream western films though. Just look at today's Pixar/Disney for example, characters in their films will often behave in exaggerated non human ways, will talk non stop, will live incredible adventures and will move around as fast as possible from the first minute until the end of the movie, because filmmakers think of kids and even adults as people with the attention span of someone with brain damage, which is exactly why their movies feel so artificial and soulless when you compare to Ghibli's. In most famous Ghibli movies you will often see characters just doing mundane things and/or not saying anything at all but especially, you will see them behaving like human beings would and not like caricatures used for the sole purpose of entertaining you. Even their most mainstream movies are somewhat like that and Kiki or Totoro as just bigger examples.
I think that filmmakers often mistake what is and isn't interesting for most people, they desperately want to grab people's attention and that's why they do everything in their power to make their films as commercial and acessible as possible, which is really a pity.

I am being 100% sincere when I say I have never seen a movie as good as this one. Maybe I will someday, but EoE resonated with me on a personal level that I feel may be impossible to duplicate.

>>150906964
>Thinking an Otaku who grew up on Ultraman gave a shit about some depressing Russian flicks where Vladmir gets drunk and reminisces.

>EoE resonated with me on a personal level that I feel may be impossible to duplicate.
I know exactly what you mean. As pretentious as it might sound, I get aggravated whenever I see some two-bit hipster internet reviewer sing praises of EoE after watching it for the first time. I know for a fact they didn't have that same kind of feeling I did when watching it as a miserable 13 year old.
>>150909899
Yeah I'm usually pretty chill about accepting others viewpoints and opinions on stuff like this but when every other fucking review of anything Eva is:
>lol Shinji's such a bitch
>___best girl
>Eva is a feminist/sexist show
>Get in the robot! XD
I can't help but feel irrationally angry.
>>150906723
EoE is amazing, but the only problem is that it's not a standalone work. All of the best parts are those that tie into the TV series, otherwise it's just psychedelic visuals.
>>150909899
When I watched Eva and EoE for the first time as a miserable 14 year old, I didn't really "get" it. It took re-watching the series years later to realize how everything came together and how much Iwas able to relate to Shinji. It's a perfect conclusion to a perfect series and once you come to truly understand it, the message can completely change your perception of the world.

Kino is a meme, but there are definitely different echelons when it comes to classifying films.
>>150904014
Akira is one of the best manga ever created too. It might be getting old, but damn, that pacing and characterization is great.
