Like he said, the story is very simple, there aren't any twists and it's pretty straightforward. The real beauty is in the atmosphere it creates with the visuals, soundtrack and complex symbolism. I think that before you watch it you need to know that Angel's egg isn't necessarily about anything, and it's up to your own interpretation, but many choose to believe that the main theme is a representation the director's struggle with religion and blind faith.

It's not a pseudo-philosphical thing at all, it's just part of the narrative of the anime, there's a very little component of dialogues in it, most of it is a visual language. But if you seek a little element of plot, the anime tells about the existential desperation caused by the collapse of one's belief system, basically.

I don't really believe in the idea that is has depth or a true message, but it's enjoyable in the atmosphere and setting.

One of the few anime I actually like.

The movie is long and tenuous without much dialogue or action - exactly how the director wanted it. It was supposed to put the viewer in an odd state of mind, leading with atmosphere instead of words. There aren't direct answers or suspenseful conclusion - it's supposed to emulate the ambiguity of faith.

The phylsophical stuff is actually pretty easy do grasp because the simple story puts it more in focus instead of hiding it int he subtext.
Just be warned that it's pretty slow, nothign much happens and you have a lot of time to think about what you see and let the art sink in.
That can eeither be boring or pretty chill, depanding on your mood

Yeah, it's a fantastic film. Definitely my favourite of Oshii's, I like how it's less a genre film than the rest of his anime work. Got a very fresh feel to it, really not much else like it. More like European arthouse than anything Japanese. Wish he'd have stayed around longer to develop his style, I feel like he could've been one of the greats.

One of the things I like the most about Angel's Egg is that it pretty much has the perfect length for what it is. A usual short film wouldn't have been able to bring it all across, but it would have never been able to support a full movie.

I mean that also depends on whether or not you count open-ended symbolism as substance. It only really has the substance the viewer is willing to give it with their interpretations. This is why art films in general never go over well with the general public who expect a story to tell them everything in a straightforward way and not expect them to think.
