Wich Ending should i watch?
I heard there were two of them, because the "fans" didnt like the original...im currently at ep 17 and was wondering if should watch the last episode or the Movie...?
>>
The entire TV series is poorly executed and with no budget. The popularity from NGE comes from the remake movie titled "Death and Rebirth". So drop the TV series and watch that instead.
After you've seen that, watch Death and Rebirth 2, aka "End of Evangelion".

Now that you've gotten the old stuff out of the way, watch the Rebuilds. Its basically the same as the old movies but better animated and some stupid changes here and there, but 3.33 is well worth watching.

NGE is one of my favorite anime, so I hope you enjoy it!

You watch everything in release order and form your own opinion.
Fans not liking is only true in the context that Japanese were really mad there wasn't a proper conclusion.
The only people who don't like the TV ending are mad because they think it's just 2deep4you bullshit, even though it makes good points and has some artistic merit.
There's no reason not to watch episodes 25 and 26.
Because seeing the parallels in EoE only strenghtens both.

>>150858405
Literally retarded.
Nobody gives a fuck about Death and Rebirth.

Reminder that NGE looks better than the Rebuilds.
>>
>>150858647
It gets really worse towards the end.
I shit you not, there are scenes in which literally nothing happens for minutes at a time. No dialogue or anything, just people standing around. The last two episodes in particular were essentially quick pencil sketches.

It was a production disaster, and Anno received death threats over it. That's why we have the superior remake movies.

Seriously, watch it as it happens. Watch the original ending (25-26) and then watch EoE to compare.
As for the their compatibility, I believe the first part of EoE fits nicely between the end of 24 and the beginning of 25, while the second part of EoE is an alternative to 25-26.

Let's be honest, they actually did a good job of using such scenes where they are relevant, even if the reason was the low budget.
The elevator scene has a meaning, the Kaworu scene has a meaning, etc.
> The last two episodes in particular were essentially quick pencil sketches
Once again, that's alright. The important part of 25-26 is the inner monologue of the lcs ocean, not the visuals.

The movie is basically a replacement for episodes 25 and 26, but at the same time, a lot of the anger and viciousness of End of Evangelion was motivated by the fan reaction to those last two episodes (death threats that Anno got from fans is literally featured in the movie), so it might be worth watching them first.

Watch the original, then EoE. The only deviation from the original airing order that you may want to make, is to watch the director's cut of episodes 21-24. And even that's arguable if you should do it the first time around (though personally, I do recommend it).

I'd suggest watching the entirely of the series. The TV shows what happens during ------ in Shinji's mind while the movie shows what happens in the physical world as well as a small bit of the aftermath. They compliment each other well, and you'd be missing out if you chose not to watch one or the other.

>>
>>150858405
Also, there are multiple editions of this, because Anno wanted to make live action movie, and they didn't allow him. If there's a lot of live action parts in your edition, it's closer to the original "director's cut".

There is quite rare recording of fan re-enactment of Anno's initial script, critics consider it the most powerful version. You can try to find that "fan live action", or whatever it is called.

Because pretty much nothing happened in the entire movie. The only character that got any development is Shinji and even that isn't all that much for 2 hours.

I think I've watched it about 4 or 5 times now and the only real issue is that it accomplishes the same things in a feature length movie that episodes 23 and 24 did on their own. It's almost a 1:1 remake of 2 episodes in terms of themes and character development padded with a lot of eye candy and fanservice. Shinji's journey is effectively the same, but everything around him is different and the ending leads the viewer to think the plot is going to diverge (just like the ending of 2.0).

Basically instead of Shinji being distanced by having his friends die/leave the city/go comatose, he's distanced by having them be pissed at him for ruining everything. Shinji meets Kaworu, who he's attached to because Kaworu is the only person who still believes in him and gives him affection. Kaworu leads Shinji into a situation where Kaworu is forced to die in order to save the world and Shinji is mindbroken by his loss. Except this time it's because Kaworu sacrificed himself instead of being killed because he betrayed Shinji, but Shinji still has a guilty conscious since he let Kaworu take the choker.

My greatest hope is that this is all intentional and 3.0 + 1.0 is going to be a showstopper. There's a huge amount of emphasis on how Shinji doesn't change at all and his development is essentially the same as in the original series, but everything around him is completely different. If Anno somehow manages to tie up all the loose ends in 3.0 and actually meant something by the whole "Evangelion is about repetition" thing then Rebuild might actually end on a better note than we've been led to believe.

until You come to me also seems to imply that a lot of the ideas converging around Shinji's unchanging nature are leading somewhere significant. We see a bunch of different shots of him in different environments lost in thought. Perhaps this implies that he's getting a chance to reflect and come to terms while he can still make a difference.

Watch everything up until episode 24'. Hopefully you're watching the BD rips with the director's cuts for episodes 21 onwards (Sephirotic is the group name for the release you should be watching).

Then watch The End of Evangelion aka Episodes 25' and 26'. The original 25 and 26 are optional, but highly recommended if you feel you have a good grasp of the characters and themes.

According to the production staff, the original 25/26 and 25'/26' are intended to be alternate endings, but they can almost be overlaid and converge at some points. The "final message" in each is different so I'd say that it's worth watching both. EoE is a much more satisfying conclusion though, which is why I say to watch it first.

If you did not quite grasp everything that happened on your first watching, you may want to rewatch the series and EoE at a later date before attempting to watch the original 25 and 26. Evangelion is very information dense so it is likely that you'll miss a lot on your first viewing.

You can watch the Rebuilds immediately after finishing the series and EoE, but heed the same warning that I gave for the original episodes 25 and 26. The Rebuilds aren't necessarily as bad as some fans may lead you to believe, but they are significantly different in many ways. They have positives (much higher production values, no Gainax budget limitations, new plot points and backstory that was left out of the original series but technically canon in both), and negatives (overuse of CG, watered-down characterization, plot is condensed for theatrical release and casual audiences, and 3.0 is really confusing right now since there's a ton of loose plot threads).

If this is a bait thread then I regret nothing. Hopefully some people will read this and find it to be a useful guide.

No they fucking aren't.
EoE doesn't give any resolution to characters other than Shinji. EoE fills the gap between 24' and 25, but the instrumentality part is done infinitely more fulfilling in the original ending.
The character study is way more important than outside plot in NGE, and it's done way better in 25-26.

Kaworu doesn't really get development, he just gets more screentime than in the TV series. Shinji's development is there but it's essentially the same as the TV series (loses all his friends, meets Kaworu, gets Kaworu killed, goes from being lonely to going on a huge guilt trip).

>>150864560
>Especially given how the scenery implies all the stuff from Zeruel to EoE actually happened, we just didn't get to see it for whatever damn reason.
All of it DID happen, except for Eva-08 being redesigned. Besides all of the filler and unnecessary fanservice, this is the most frustrating part of 3.0. The fact that the implications of the preview are apparent in the movie but we don't actually see any of those events play out is just fucking stupid.
>>

>>150866841
My apologies, I shouldn't have said that they're optional. I forgot how important 26 was especially. I've only rewatched up to 25 recently which is mostly character analysis that can be gleaned from careful observation.

I'd still recommend watching them after EoE though, because they make much more sense after you see the context that they're supposed to take place in and provide a sort of peace of mind/tie up all of the loose ends about the characters that aren't touched upon directly in the narrative.

Both watchmen and Evangelion have that brush with the apocalypse.

Ok, so Shinji recieves this life-reassuring message, rejects instrumentality and voices his desire to continue living in a world full of people.
And then the first thing he does in such a world is fucking strangles his old friend. How does that make any sense? He said he wanted other people himself, why is he strangling them all of a sudden.

>>150867807
He strangles Asuka to make sure that she's real. In Instrumentality she let him strangle her, and he knew that the real Asuka would stop him. When she reaches up and touches him, he starts crying because he realizes that he's back in reality.

He was NOT actually trying to kill her.

Her original line was going to be something like "There's no way I'll let you kill me".

Most of the world infrastructure would still be intact, and the atmosphere is clearly still breathable so they'd be fine for at least a few years.

There's a SFW doujinshi called Epilogue of Evangelion where they travel the world after Third Impact and survive by taking supplies from stores and whatnot.
>>
>>150868242
> or can you eat LCL
Assuming LCL is the "primordial soup", is it drinkable? I mean it contains all the nutrients, but that's exactly why mircroorganisms including pathogenic would be all over it. And boiling it supposedly denaturates all the good stuff.
>>
>>150867673
> All living creatures have the power to be brought back to life
What's exactly the definition of living here? Asuka looked pretty dead by the time popping into orange goo took place and Misato saw a Rei-messenger before her death, despite the fact that the third impact hadn't happened by that point.
>>
>>150868536
Referring to Shinji dissolved in LCL as "primordial soup" is a semi-erroneous statement by Ritsuko to cover up what really happened and what the implications were.

LCL in its inert state is considered to be the blood of Lilith. In the Evangelion universe humans are made up of a soul and LCL. The soul projects an AT Field, which reshapes the fundamental structure of the LCL into biological compounds and keeps the shape of the body.

LCL is also sterile when inert, and so the sea of LCL is basically a sterile body of the liquid with all human souls floating around in it without AT Fields.

>>150868683
Your soul remains intact when you die. When Lilith collected all of the souls into the Doors of Guf, she collected ALL souls living or dead. The people who were still living had their AT Fields neutralized so their souls could be extracted, which is why their bodies decomposed into LCL.
>>
>>150868908
Oh yeah, and about the Ritsuko coverup thing. What really happened wasn't that Shinji was dissolved into the LCL, rather his soul was temporarily taken into the core of Eva-01 so his body lost its shape.

Once Yui was done with her pep talk she spit him back out of the core (presumably with a fresh body, since the cores of Evas are what supply the LCL that fills the cockpit).

She was still alive and conscious when those injuries happened. When reshaping the body, her mind (or soul, whatever) remembered those wounds as a part of her, but "fixed" them in a fashon that "makes sense" - therefore bandages over a sewn-together arm.

That's not entirely wrong once you get to the scale of electrons or light. They only exist if someone is paying attention to them. In fact, that part's not wrong at all.

15 eps in and it might honestly be the most meh anime I've ever seen

Normal science coexists with "metaphysical biology". Unless a soul is forcibly removed from a body or you project an anti-AT Field, biochemistry behaves like it does in the real world. And like I said, the soul remains even after someone dies.

LCL is some magic shit from an alien race and only humans are said to explicitly be made from it. They don't really touch upon whether non-angelic lifeforms have souls or operate in the same way.

I think they're just supposed to represent the wounds she remembered before getting instagibbed like >>150869349 says. There's some dumb Evageeks theories about it not actually being Asuka but rather an amalgam with Rei [and possibly Misato], but that's most likely just fanwank bullshit. Her behavior is most in-line with Asuka and large amounts of EoE's instrumentality deal with Shinji and Asuka interactions.

AHHHHHHHHH as a physicist I'm fucking triggered

Fucking triggered. This pseudo-philosophical crap gets repeated over and over by people who simply don't know jackshit about modern physics. Electrons or light (aka photons) exist (aka have non-zero wave functions) even when there's no observation taking place. Observation merely gives you a fixed eigenvalue of the eigenfunction (the wave function of the object you are observing) and the operator (the parameter you are measuring, such as coordinate, speed, energy, etc).

What if they feed on "Lilith" there is probably enough Lilith meat to survive for a century.

Spicy symbolism, bud.

Sadly by too many anime

Or they could just loot canned food from grocery stores like sane people. I think after all of Shinji's psychological trauma involving Rei he'd be a little hesitant to eat her giant corpse.
