Some thoughts on the first chapter of ACES.

The combat in this chapter was not very good. The fight between Deluge and Patricia was intense, but I'm not liking how this series is incorporating more and more faceless minions to get killed off en masse. It's been a trend since Limited and it's disappointing since the lack of stuff like this has been a strong point of the series for me so far.

With that said, I'm really liking the new characters, the three sisters seem really cool and I can already tell that I'm going to fucking hate Ripple for killing Sachiko. Although I think I can make a pretty good guess why..

In particular I really liked this line


Sachiko was… for better or worse, a scaredy cat.

And that’s okay, she’s Sorami’s older sister, and Sorami’s fine with that. Sachiko wanted a happy life, but with her timidness and cowardice, it’s quite hard for her get that.

It bothers me because the strongpoint of the series has always been the fact that everyone who dies has such humanity. It's what elevates the series above your typical grim/dark splatterfest: all the characters feel like they matter which makes the fights feel really emotional.

When you start introducing lots of faceless characters who don't matter it takes away from that. It also really contributes to the sense of power creep which is NOT a good thing.

I liked the Deluge vs Patricia fight too. It was super intense if a bit hard to follow at times. But I thought the fight with Armor Early and the fate of the escort with Patricia being left unresolved were both pretty bad.

I had the same issues with the prison breakout scene from Limited. I just don't like when they show a bunch of faceless minions in one scene and then just move on like they never even existed.
