I like to think Hashmal's beam is like a lightsaber.
It will cause magnetic/gravitational loops toward its target/s before releasing a plasma like projectile that will ride said magnetic/gravitational wave.

Then there's the whole making war into a game by creating AI and it eventually getting out of everyone's control. S1 had a proper plot about a bunch of stray kids going from point A to point B and blasting their way through the various political struggles of the galaxy. It was no masterpiece but it had a purpose of some sort, a sense of progression of Tekkadan becoming something

S2 so far seems like they're letting the mechas designers and Bandai execs having their fun with new MS every week and an aimless plot (hey, pirates! hey, mercenaries! hey, ancient evil MA!) to postpone the actual resolution of McGillis character which was the only thing from S1 worth developping.

Most of the times it's done bad though and that true in Kudelia's case because all her involvement in it is some sob story, a short dialogue-less scene speaking to politicians and everything works out because she's SUGOI.

Kudelia never made a speech about understanding stopping wars.
At the end of S1 she basically ordered a coup d'état against Arbrau so that Makanai would get elected and help her business.
She's far from being the usual Gundam princess trope, but I agree that she is the weakest thing about S1, and that's mostly due to the writing of the individual episodes which gave her much more importance that she actually needed for her character to work, and it became annoying on the long run.
