Zexal was first revealed in Feb VJump on Dec 13, 2010, Arc-V was first revealed in Weekly Jump on Dec 11, 2013.

VJump leaks will be early this week since the magazine is coming out on the 17th rather than 21st so leaks could be as early as tomorrow. Odds are we'll find out the series in VJump or Weekly Jump in the next 2-3 days before the festa.

Arc-V did have tension, well it did until around the end of the battle royal where the antagonists were confirmed to be a complete joke.
This was once again confirmed around the middle of synchro as well.
Arc-V also removed tension because if you fought Academia and lost you got carded. Would the protagonist get carded? Of course not.

I mean Yusho was somehow crippled on one leg and got DARKNESS smashed through a fucking wall: Not just like Reiji who get pressed against it. But literally flew through a wall with bricks around him being smashed to pieces and all the shit.

And I assume he flew only through one wall because thats what we were shown onscreen. But assuming Yuri carded Yugo just 5 meters away from Reiji and Reira, which would be fucking pathetic, I assume Yusho got smashed through some more walls.

Yet seconds later he stood up and went to duel. And these two fuckers are now leaving it to a guy who clearly has not longer any control over his egao mode.

So who do you think has suffered the most during the series? For me it's definitely Shun, because he lost his home, his sister (who even isn't his real sister), his best friend and he is contantly getting hurt by ridiculous things because writers just don't wan't screen time for him.

The issue is that Yuma doesn't often grow during his duels. So they end up way fucking worse to deal with on average.

There's a definite case to be made for Shark, Kaito, the arclights, and a couple of the barians who all have duels that strictly work to develop them, but it doesn't make the endless amounts of filler Yuma duels any less terrible.

But that's wrong. Yuma does grow through his duels. It's like you didn't watch Zexal. Yuma is a selfish careless person early on. He doesn't start showing how he feels about people until he duels. Like against Kaito. In their first duel, Yuma realized just how fucked he was and screamed Astral's name in fear when they realized they were about to lose and Astral was going to die. That led to a training arc which led to Yuma and Astral acquiring Zexal due to their bonds. Then you have the whole Haruto arc. Everything that happened during the WDC Duel Coaster section that had Yuma feeling hopeless until Gauche dueled him, the final Kaito duel of Zexal, Yuma being afraid of Tachyon which led to the hospital duel with Shark etc.

Yuma's dueling tactics definitely improved as the series progressed, I guess that approving it would probably be a different story.

His duels against Gauche and Alito are good examples of this, as he won against them without help from Astral.
There's also his duel against Kaito before the Barian arc started, and his duel against Shark after his encounter with Mizael.

Filler duels don't cancel out the meaningful duels. Every protag goes through tons of filler. That's what happens when you have 3+ year series that shill a product. Yusei and Yuya are the only protags that actually regress as their shows go on.

I really doubt the repeat/longtime watchers are their primary concern. If it was, wouldn't it be just as easy to piss them off by meddling with DM in another inevitably drawn out shounen? The problem with Yuya is that he started as an annoying, skilless borderline-autistic MC. And it's hard to root for such a person, because I don't feel like he deserves it. Before he gets gud, his early wins are solely protag armor.

The writing staff has proven they can't handle something as large scale as this at this point in time. Arc-V isn't even really about the Dimensional War; that war that's hardly explored at all beyond two raids on two cities during two tournaments and a brief glimpse at the restlessness of the resistors messing around in the remnants of their already destroyed city.

The "war" is a joke; because it lacks what makes even the most basic war story compelling. The progressive growth of a soldier, his connection to his comrades, and the ideals of both sides. Academia doesn't have ideals; they're psychopaths waiting to be dicked down by the only person who does; Sakaki Yuya.

ZEXAL was a better story about a war.

2 & 3 are in direct conflict, though. Making more realistic decks would make deck-out strategies especially rare.

I noticed while watching: starting in 5D's, most of the plays seemed pretty realistic, i.e. they don't do anything particularly amazing outside of super-specific trap and spell cards. ZEXAL didn't seem to bad, if only because the game didn't move on that much. But in ARC-V, it seems like the plays are LESS powerful than the actual card game. In an era where every single character could pull off multiple of those big, flashy plays per turn, they instead write in weak cards with a few super-specific ones for use in a single duel. Smile World must be hard to write around, since the times it is rarely useful for anything other than direct attacks in the actual game; all the times Yuya uses it, the combo is based around multiple very-specific cards with effects that would be useless in any other situation.

EGAO dragons are adorable, though. I hope Zarc plays Zarc so I can see his face.

I can't really see how Yusei/Jack is more fleshed out than Atem/Kaiba. All Yusei/Jack had is that first arc but their rivalry fizzled out afterwards. It was hardly touched upon again and never became a real focus. Even both characters just kind of developed on their own. Most of Jack's development came thanks to Carly, not Yusei. Yusei himself became Jesus so he didn't need anyone to teach him a lesson.

Atem/Kaiba rivalry actually drove the narrative and was a major focus for most of the story. Each time they met we learned something new about them and their relationship became more complex. With each meeting their character had changed bringing adding a new layer to their relationship. Atem and Kaiba are also better foils for each other because they both have similar characteristics but took different paths in their life. Atem and Kaiba both had pride and selfishness but one was able to move past that while the other couldn't. Their rivalry was always a fated one spanning several millennia. It's literally a part of history.

Whenever I think of rivalries in YGO Atem/Kaiba is just the definitive one for me. They just have such great chemistry together, not to say Yusei and Jack don't but I just can't see it on the same level because not enough time was spent on their rivalry compared to Atem and Kaiba.

Reiji is the "official" rival, but you're right. Sawatari is the other Pendulum user, so it would be nice if he was actually more competitive of Yuya, similar to Vegeta post-Freezer. Something like a mutual friendship, but a one-sided rivalry would suit him. He's the one character I wish was a more competent duelist.
