I can almost sympathize with him deciding to go so low to save Armin's life during serum bowl. He didn't want to lose someone else he cherishes and is used to be around with, especially when he struggled with just who he is to this world.
His selfishness is what will ultimately doom the manga but it's hard to blame him at this point, for me at least.

After reading his most recent interviews, I kinda figured Isayama felt the same way about Eren, which is understandable since he by his own admission didn't have a very good grasp of his character at the beginning of the story.
It almost feels like he used the anime as a means of fixing those parts of Eren's character that he believed were lacking. As much as mangafags dislike the finale for its seemingly sacrificing logic for a more climactic end (as well as many other things that I thought were absolutely worthy of criticism), I personally think that it did a very good job at highlighting just how dangerous and potentially self-destructive Eren's mindset. As long as it doesn't stray to far from his canon character arc then I wouldn't mind if the show does a little bit more with his character in the upcoming season.
