x265 would indeed be a bit harsh on my computer; my C2D doesn't support it.

Not OP, but I'm using such a computer right now. Anime with high-bitrate video and elaborate typesetting seriously fucks with my computer. To point out a recent example, GJM's Luluco was simply unwatchable, even though it wasn't a BD release.

I often see people making fun of computers that run XP, and each time I hear them, something within me dies. It's not some prehistoric OS, it handles modern software just fine! I am living proof of that.
>>
I can't wait for Daiz to force High Efficiency Video Coding Main 4:4:4 10 on us.
>>
>>150762904
>It's not some prehistoric OS
Yes it is. It was fucking prehistoric in 2007 when Windows Vista was released and could support more than 2^32 bytes of RAM without breaking all of software compatibility.
>>
>>150762904

There's no reason to be using Windows XP in 2016, unless you're using some legacy software that can only be run on XP and it would cost a heap to upgrade, but that shouldn't be an issue for an average consumer.
>>
>>150762904

>>
>>150762943
Fair enough, really. But this doesn't apply to me, with a meager gigabyte of RAM (that I recently upgraded from 512 mb). I've heard people say one has to have at least 4 gigabytes of RAM nowadays to just browse the internet nowadays, but that's just bullshit.
>>150762980
That's the hardware's fault, not the OS'. If I had better hardware, there wouldn't have been any problems. But then again, if I had better hardware, I'd be running a newer OS. Windows 7+ simply crash midway during the installation, and Linux, though lighter, is too drastic a change.
>>150763010
See what I said above. I'm not doing it out of choice, my hardware is shit and nothing newer will run. Linux is appealing, but I still rely on some windows-specific software.
>>150763038
Not really. To add, I also don't have a realtime antivirus installed, too - I have little resources already. I just occasionally run MBAM and have a router-level firewall just in case. It also helps that I'm not a total idiot that doesn't know how to stay secure.

Nvidia's GeForce 10 series supports 10-bit HEVC decoding, even on the cheapest GTX 1050. I think AMD's offerings only support a narrower subset of the HEVC profiles and do not include support for High 10, but don't quote me on that.

Not that fansubbers use HEVC yet.

Nah, anon. You misunderstood. 10bit 720p x264 runs satisfyingly. There's some jitter and skipping - it doesn't run as good as 480p videos do, but it's tolerable. I've tried out some x265, and it runs like total shit. Maybe it's because I don't have a dedicated GPU.

Standards are not meant to be something static and are meant to change. Encoders should be ""progressive"". As new shit is release, they should be ready to adapt to it at any time. People with old computers is not an excuse for encoders to hold back the future. If you want to watch it, re-encode it yourself or download from a re-encoder.

This applies to everything related to technology and computers.

The problem is that anime encoders (and anime encoders only) have this unhealthy fascination with newest codecs that have a bare minimum of software support. This worked 10+ years ago when you had to have a powerful PC to do just about anything, but sucks now with all these tablets, phablets, craplets, smart TVs, knife-thin macbooks and other assorted media devices that do not run the latest and hottest version of mpv.
>>
>>150764008
All of it.
>>
The best part of fansubbing was when some encoder monkey decided to flex his dick by spending 20 hours on a million signs that had to be drawn in real time and tanked the playback to 1fps if you weren't using a very specific hardware and software setup.

I don't miss fansubs one fucking bit.

>>150762401
Who cares, you shouldn't be watching your waifu on a toaster, she should mean more to you than that.
>>
>>150764077
Typically, encoding and typsetting would be done by different people in a group, so it would be the typesetter responsible for the signs. In the era of softsubs, signs have nothing to do with the encoder.
>>
>>150764008
>stole
Please don't talk about things you don't understand.
>>
>>150764131
I really don't give a shit. The position of typesetter was filled by the encoder right up until a group could find another idiot willing to work for free on something they'd get zero credit for.

Because anime encoders normally aren't normalfags and are generally more for the bleeding edge side of things. So it's only natural they will always strive to do better or should. Deadfish are there for a reason, anon. They are there for anything that isn't your pc.

THEY JUST NOW MADE THE SWITCH TO FUCKING MATROSKA, ALMOST 10 FUCKING YEARS AFTER IT BECAME A STANDARD IN THE FANSUB COMMUNITY.
The fact that less people watch anime makes it easier to make transitions like that.. Yes, I remember the 10-bit thing, but that got smoothed out pretty quick.

>>
>>150764228
Fansubbers were just entitled cunts. If you're the only ones working on a show, and you release it in a specific format, everyone has to adapt or wait for a re-encode.

The minuscule performance increases were never fucking worth it, but they kept crusading on, endlessly trying to one-up each other with ever more obscure codecs.
>>
>>150764316
GPL isn't the same as free software.
>>
>>150764292
Still here.

If something's going to drive me out of here it has to be 4chan itself completely dropping the ball. Sadly, recent trends seem to indicate that could actually happen one of these days.

>>150764353
>endlessly trying to one-up each other with ever more obscure codecs.

That never happened, though. Have you ever seen anyone release Dirac encodes in NUT containers, for example?

About the most "obscure" format you see in fansub releases these days is Opus for audio and that's something even most browsers support.
>>
>>150764388
>Still here.
Why haven't you killed yourself yet?
>>
>>150763159
You know, I was really considering getting into anime encoding about two years ago, but after seeing how desolate fansubbing had become, I realized that there's no point to learn about properly using AVIsynth and x264. The majority of shows don't benefit from BD rips over the HorribleSubs stream rip anyway, so fuck it.
>>
>>150764437
>The majority of shows don't benefit from BD rips over the HorribleSubs stream rip anyway, so fuck it
BD usually has uncensored release
>>
>>150764037
That happens in each less-popular community, no? Even in the music community, opus is slowly gaining favour over AAC. The guy that downloads Taylor Swift songs won't care about the improvements opus brings over mp3 or aac, he just wants to play that shit on his phone, like he usually does.
So should the community hamper progress because of people like this? I don't think so.
>>150764388
>4chan itself completely dropping the ball
Agreed with this one, really. 4chan has been completely unbearable since around the middle of this summer. I thought I would never leave this place, but it seems like it's in the realm of possibility right now.
>>
>>150764353
You can't be seriously trying to claim that the format changes we have are "minuscule"? Have you ever compared a x265 video to a xvid one? There is a worlds difference. Just because you can't see it or don't understand the technical difference it doesn't mean its not there. The job of a good encoder is to force modern format standards.

A [HorribleSubs] release runs noticeably better, and this time, I could enable hardware decoding. Skipping also worked really well, as compared to the [GJM-DDY] release.

You might have problems with this right now, but think long-term. The changes in the fansubbing community you're upset by now? It will pass. The consumers of encoders work are actually expected to conform to the "autistic" changes in technology and adaptation. After all, the consumer doesn't release anything.

Technology is constantly developing and changing which means shit is always moving. Sorry, but as shit changes hoops will have to be jumped in order to move towards the future. Welcome to the world of the bleeding edge and weeb scene is at the forefront of it. Your complaining is pointless and dumb as you are complaining about people who are ahead of the game before everyone else is well, ahead of the game. Re-encoders are there for people like you. For everyone else, normal encoders will and SHOULD adapt the latest tech that works. The inconvenience for a small minority running toasters is irrelevant to what should be the modern standards. You were going to have to jump through all these inconvenient hoops multiple times anyway. Unless you are the sort of people who would rather us still be on xvid or .rmvb.

This is what is called entitlement. Expecting people to literally pick sub-par quality garbage and refuse moving to the future all for the sake of your autistic whims of your convenience. Anon made a good post for this earlier >>150765611

On crimson 16.11.5 w/ a 290x; mpc doesn't work for me if I try using madVR.
Also started using MPV; while I prefer the uncluttered interface, I wonder if madVR's virtual super resolution in combination with scalers would be better for my new 4k monitor than just the scalers offered by madVR/MPV.
