Decided to check out some of the "better" Anime, and watched this, hearing it was apparently one of the best.

The plot is a mess, it feels like the story was stiched together as cheaply crafted avenue for the visuals. The animation was well done, but the film was too tonally sparse to really effect me as a story.

Are the rest of this director's films like this?

Watch it again, seriously. When I re-watched it I wasn't lost at all. And no, his other work deals with similar themes but aren't as confusing.

Anime is a visual medium primarily, if you want something with a focus on narrative you almost have to go searching for stuff from before the 90's or even 80's, before animation techniques were strong enough to leave an impression. I recommend stuff like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Ashita no Joe, Mobile Suit Gundam, etc.

Also, I know it'll get memed to death but have you tried sitting down and watching Neon Genesis Evangelion?
