It's not all that well understood yet, since it's a series of really complex processes. But the basic idea is like this: Your body stores up resources and then expends them in a burst of growth, then stores them up again, for a few cycles, then is exhausted. A person can vary in their genetic potential at any stage of this. So, your body may be good at saving up xxx, or it might be a little more efficient at spending yyy, or one part of the cycle might be extended a little in a way that benefits the overall outcome, and so on. And then your actual envionment can obviously also come into play. If you spend a long period of your youth hungry, your body can't store up as many resoruces, so it may skip some of these growth cycles entirely, even though you had the genetic potential to take advantage of them if you had been better fed, or hadn't gotten a serious case of the measles, or whatever. So, she had a lot of potential and her enviornment let it be expressed. It's probably impossible right now to narrow it down any more specifically than that.
