I don't exactly understand religion in Berserk

I guess the best place to start would be when Judeau mentions the 4 gods, which we know as just the members of Godhand. They helped Skull Knight or whatever but that's not important. Then Griffith does nothing wrong and becomes the 5th member. Guts goes full edge until Conviction, where we actually see more of the religion. The religion of Berserk is based around worshiping a hawk because one saved a battle or something, I think it's similar to some historical figure and his conversion to Christianity, or I'm thinking of Constantine and it's a different situation but whatever. As much as I dislike the manga and recommend people to read it first, the Eclipse hits harder when you don't get any actual future foreshadowing of the outcome. When you read the manga, you know Griffith became a demon somehow and that Guts was a sacrifice. The anime starts immediately from the start and you don't get why Guts is fighting monsters, until you go directly to the Golden Age. It's a flashback explaining what happened to Guts, not the relationship between Guts and Griffith.
