They marketed four, but yeah there's only one real protagonist - Kumiko. The rest only float in and out relative to whatever drama she's focusing on. Hazuki especially hasn't done anything at all either since the festival. Absolutely nothing. That's my main bitch about this show - it doesn't have to be slice of life, but the lack of lighter moments to contrast the heavier drama and wasting two very interesting supporting characters in Midori and Hazuki give this show a very uneven feel. Reina too, with the bait-and-switch yuri, feels completely useless.

I like this show and I like the characters, but it feels so... compressed. Maybe that's because there's only so many episodes for a season, but it's like there's no moment to just pause and digest everything to get a feel for the other characters. No levity to make you fond of anyone else. Kumiko, and possibly Asuka are the only ones truly fleshed out - the rest of the cast is basically scenery. That makes sense given that she's the narrator and our eyes for the series, but it's unfulfilling and boring.

I shouldn't compare it to K-On since they're two different genres, but it's a good example of how to flesh out characters and expand on the source material that obviously KyoAni knows.

Sounds like a great way to ruin the solidarity of the band by suddenly throwing out a player who made the effort and already has proven herself. The difference between Asuka replacing Natsuki and Nozomi replacing a flutist is that Nakagawa already failed tryouts and was put back in as quick fix to losing one out of the two competent euphonium players right before the competition. Natsuki doesn't even want to take over the part. Meanwhile, Nozomi would be replacing a flutist who already passed and likely doesn't want to get thrown out just because somebody better came back halfway into the year.
