Don't see the point of foreshadowing it and expanding upon it just to not make any use of it. Plus we're reaching the end of the manga, getting rid of main characters at this stage should be much easier to do as it won't have nearly as much impact on the advancement of the narrative than it would have had one or two arcs ago. If I remember the Gong Kakutogi interview right, he said he's not particularly attached to his characters on an emotional level, so I doubt he'd have trouble killing them off if it becomes convenient for him to do so (unlike the serumbowl fiasco with Armin and Erwin, which was really just a necessary evil in order to keep CT's power in the story).

Clash of Titans was excellent and it had all five of them. Utgard had some pacing issues but it wasn't brought down by their presence. I'd also argue that before the serumb owl mess the Basement arc was going great.

I don't think anyone is gonna argue that Isayama wasting Armin's sacrifice by keeping him alive was disappointing as shit but I'm more than willing to give it a pass considering that the basement reveals that came right after were actually satisfying and lived up to the insane hype (at least imo).
