The same way a bayonet was useful for combat. Most swords have a reach that a machete or knife doesn't have. While yes, a pistol has the advantage in terms of damage and range, think of it this way. You're standing 5 feet from someone, you have a pistol and they have a sword running at you. You may shoot them in the head or leg and drop them instantly, but the chance of shooting them in the chest where a bullet proof vest exists is also a possibility due to you panicking, whereas if that happens, that sword is going to be in your face or causing some type of damage to you in some way.

Like I said, they don't have many uses, but they do have some, especially depending on where you are in the world and who it is you're fighting. Condensed areas or places to hide makes them more useful than say an open desert.

I don't think there's anyone on earth who would have a body comparable to Guts' as the manga describes.

Putting aside how comically huge the swords look, the feats up until the dragonslayer are real. Guts said during the 100 man battle the sword was 3 times a normal sword, so despite looking much larger than that we can probably put stock in his words.

The math I have done suggests Dragonslayer weighs about 180-200lbs.

Doing some simple maths. 5 feet long 1 foot wide and 1 inch thick
Iron is 0.284 lb/in3
60 * 12 * 1 * .284. = 204 lbs
3/4 of an inch thick = 153
1/2 of an inch thick = 102

6 feet long and 1.5 feet wide = 368 lbs
only 1/2 thick 184 lbs

The table I am on right now is less than an inch thick. I can't imagine a sword being thicker than that. For Dargonslayer to be 2 inches thick would make it impossible to swing. That is almost like swinging Andre the Giant around. The thickness would have to be really close to 1/2 inch for any person to swing it. (I am certain Dragonslayer is not that thin) That brings the weight down to 100 lbs. When I was 18 years old I could barely do 10 curl reps of 70 lbs dumbbells.

The thought of anyone swinging Dragonsalyer around like Guts does is pure fantasy.

It's completely impossible. Lifting a 400 pound object from the edge, like the hilt of a sword, is much harder than lifting it from the middle, which isn't easy to begin with. And swinging it around would take a lot more strength than just lifting it.

And even if you somehow were that strong, it would still be impossible to use because of Newton's third law. The amount of force your body puts into the sword is equal to the amount of the force the sword puts into your body, which means that the sword's weight will swing you around more than you would swing it around. You'd have to cover your body in hundreds if not thousands of pounds of weight just to avoid being carried around by your own swing, and all of that extra weight would mean your strength would have to be that much more superhuman.

In real life the upper limit of how heavy a sword can be and remain practically useful is something like 5 pounds.
